This text has been specifically designed for pupils to use when learning how to pick out literary techniques used by writers and for them to explain why the writer has used these examples that they have picked out. This series of resources is to be taught while studying ‘Of Mice and Men’. It is designed predominantly for classes in Special Needs schools in the UK. Each lesson is differentiated. This means that the lessons are set at EL1, EL2, EL3 and at wither Level 1 Functional Skills or GCSE. There are reading, writing and speaking and listening lessons. Both the writing and speaking and listening lessons can be taught using various marking schemes. These lessons can also be used in main stream education for pupils working either below GCSE level or at a low GCSE level. This lesson prepares pupils for writing exams.

This resource introduces students to the idea of using a variety of sentence openings. To begin with, they are given example sentence openings and images to help them to write their sentences. The activity finishes with them writing a short text independently using a variety of sentence openings.

This is the 2nd lesson in the Private Peaceful series and it is to be taught with Chapeter 2: ‘Twenty To Eleven’. It centres on the character of Big Joe. It could be taught as one lesson or as a short series of lessons. It consists of a comprehension exercise, a writing plan, a writing task about Big Joe and an extension activity.

This all encompassing observation form covers all bases. It includes each area and aspect of learning as detailed in the EYFS Profile as well as the characteristics of effective learning. It has a space for you to write detailed observations of the individual child and has a number of key questions for the adult to develop and embed learning. Finally there is a box to record the child’s next steps. Characteristics of effective learning are denoted by 3 cartoon characters - Dora the Explorer, Tree Fu Tom and Peter Rabbit. However you could change these images to suit your style or chosen characters.

This presentation is used to introduce similes and metaphors to pupils while also giving them a series of activities to complete that help them to understand them. These activities are either completed verbally, on an interactive white board or on paper. It is normally used in a series of lessons, lasting between three and four hours. The first part of the presentation deals with similes and concludes with pupils making a similes poem that describes a beast. The second part introduces metaphors and concludes with the pupils describing themselves using metaphors.

These four resources are used to help students to use different types of punctuation. There a variety of activities for using question marks, commas in a list, exclamation marks and for punctuating speech. Pupils are also encouraged to use capital letters and full stops correctly.
