EPI Activities for ESOL
A collection of Extensive Processing Instruction activities to teach ESOL following the MARS-EARS framework. This document provides a menu of activities to choose from when planning, not a sequence to follow.
Most of these have been taken from Breaking the Sound Barrier by Gianfranco Conti and Steve Smith, and selected because they are suited to adult ESOL classes and have been tried and tested in that context.
I put this together for my own use, but I’m sharing in case it is useful to others. Many activities are listed by title only, as I am very familiar with them. Please refer to the book for a full description.
Activities are arranged according to MARS-EARS stage, roughly in the order I might use them in a teaching sequence, but many activities can be used at different stages with a little adaptation.
Mode (speaking/listening/reading/writing) is indicated by emoji, but this is very loose and only to help quickly choose a healthy balance of skills when planning in a hurry.
