Indiana Jones - Adventure, survival stories - Implementing genre features - Internal dialogue

Indiana Jones - Adventure, survival stories - Implementing genre features - Internal dialogue - Could alternatively be used as a stimulus for a ‘big write.’ I found very little in terms of creative content in this area so made my own creative lesson up. (Delivered to a year 5/6 class of 30 children.) RESOURCE FEATURES… Lesson Plan (used in an observation lesson.) PowerPoint - Including embedded video clips, starter to the lesson and details of activity. Worksheet for starter asking the children to name the genre from a general description. (Answers on PowerPoint.) Separate video clip for lesson All you need for a creative literacy lesson with the following objectives and success criteria. Learning Objective: To know and understand the features of survival / adventure stories Success criteria: • Powerful verbs • Dialogue and internal voice (the PowerPoint / clips are especially useful for this concept.) • Description to create excitement Children are then asked to produce a piece of creative writing (as set out in the lesson plan / PowerPoint) with the film clip as a stimulus.

Winter Trees - Art Drawing - Line

A Powerpoint to support the sketching of ‘winter trees.’ I made this for a year 3/4 class to show them examples of winter trees (with no leaves) for discussion before going outside and sketching real life trees. In addition there are some images I used as a print out for the children to discuss and refer to, these may help teachers with the demonstration of the technique too. I have also included an additional Powerpoint I have made with non-commercial pictures of winter trees to show children.

Playscripts - Shrek - Boys Writing - Converting text into a playscript using movie clips.

Ideal for a year 7-9 year olds and can be differentiated accordingly. This lesson involves following a short section of the film Shrek and its script that I have typed out. Children then go on to write a short section of the script by converting a piece of text into a playscript. Children have loved this lesson and it always provides some funny voices too from the class. A great way to get boys interested in writing. Includes Required short video clips, cut to measure Lesson plan Required worksheets Required script sections Please comment if you find this resource useful.

Fantasy / Adventure Stories - Boys Writing - VERY Unique! Thundercats

(1)
Completely ORIGINAL and works fantastically. Developed in collaboration with an esteemed colleague. These are some of the resources I used and created when the children were doing fantasy stories, we linked it to the Thundercat cartoon, did character descriptions and settings. I always do this topic with the children in year 3/4, the short episodes of the series all offer a clear beginning, middle and end which lends itself very well to some excellent short stories by the children. The ‘cave of time’ is an especially good episode with a clear problem, build up and solution etc Included a weekly plan and a map that can be printed over 2 pieces of paper for display. I have also included a set of Top Trump example attributes for this resource which really gets the boys extremely motivated and could be used as an additional activity to be played later on in Golden Time. This is very comprehensive and I have used this many times successfully with years 3-5. The boys especially don’t stop talking about it!

Personality of a Character: Gollum / The Hobbit / Character Description

(1)
LO: Understand how writers portray character personality through writing. This is a lesson based on exploring the techniques a writer uses to show a characters personality and requires pupils to use the evidence from the text extract I have included from the book 'The Hobbit' it is an excellent extract featuring the character 'Gollum.' The Powerpoint I have made goes through the process of... S (speech) A (actions) D (description) Children can then annotate their text accordingly and / or draw the character with annotations. Highly adaptable for many ages. The 1970's version of the hobbit features a similar conversation on YouTube. BONUS I have included a snippet of the text from 'The Hobbit' an activity for children to highlight all the parts of the text that describe the hobbit / wizard and the house. They then draw a picture to match their highlights. The results can be compared to the artists impression I have included.
