Here is a resource to use with year 6 pupils when thinking about transition to year 7. The lessons focus on the following topics: Subjects Timetables Following a timetable Getting lost Making friends Clubs and opportunities Planner organisation After school timetable managing your time. Lesson 1 includes: A detailed overview of what they might cover in year 7 based on the KS3 curriculum. Each subject has an overview of what they might learn. A worksheet for the children to complete about the subjects they will cover. An example of a one week secondary school timetable and a quiz for the children to complete based on the timetable - e.g. where is this subject taught? Do you have the same teacher for English every lesson? etc An example of a two week secondary school timetable and quiz for the children to complete based on the timetable - e.g. why might you need a two week timetable? How many times over the two weeks do you have chemistry? Both timetables are included within the PowerPoint and can be easily printed off for the children. Lesson 2 and 3 includes: Powerpoint for two lessons, 34 slides in length covering the topic of homework and organisation. It includes planner examples, timetables and all of the resources they need to bring to their secondary school. Planner example pages of good and bad planners and how to organise your workload. Blank after school timetable template for the children to use next year. Blank ‘What to take to secondary school’ template for the children to use next year (resource H). Resource sheet A - matching activity of the different formats of homework they will receive. Resource sheet B - Comparing the two planner examples activity using an example of a good and a bad planner. Resource C and D - Using a list of tasks given by ‘teachers’ (resource D) the children have to fill in their blank planner (resource C) with the information as if they were being set the homework at school. Resource E - elicit the children’s ideas on what they think they might need to bring to school. Resource F, G and H - the children will be using an example timetable of a school day (resource F) and an example after school timetable (resource G) to create a resources list for each school day using the ‘what I need every day’ sheet (resource H). Lesson 4 and 5 include: Information on different clubs and how they might be beneficial. Information on making friends. Information on finding your way around schools. Links to BBC transition resources. Worksheets on making friends in secondary school (3 in total).

This is a two week writing resource focusing on description. It uses parts from chapters 1 -4 of War Horse. It is for the children to write about leaving the pen after being sold to arriving at the stables. This goes through a writing process in the following format: Analysing Joey’s feelings in the first chapter Key vocabulary searching Reading and analysing example texts and high quality descriptive writing from other novels Planning the writing Drafting the first paragraph (Joey leaving the pen after being sold) with modelled writing Drafting the second paragraph (The journey to the stables) with modelled writing Drafting the third paragraph (Arriving at the stables) with modelled writing Big writing the final piece Each lesson also has a grammar focus beginning with identifying main clauses and subordinate clauses and then moving onto relative clauses in the second week. The PowerPoint has guidance on this but I have used resources from elsewhere for the activities the children need to complete (only for the grammar). Resources included in this pack: A comprehensive PowerPoint for all of the sessions including examples (48 slides) Resource pack 1 contains: success criteria, key vocabulary in 2 sizes, feelings matching resource for lesson 1, PEE paragraph templates for lesson 1, Chapter 2 and 3 summary notes crib sheets, key vocabulary and definition matching activity for lesson 2, 3 x differentiated planning sheets, sentence starters, modelled text for the first paragraph ‘Roll on the wall’ horse template extracts from high quality texts - differentiated 3 ways matching activity for emotions Resource pack 2 contains: success criteria, writing frames for each paragraph, key vocabulary, sentence starters for all three paragraphs.

This resource is a 6 week unit of work learning about saints. The unit of work consists of: Week 1 - What is a saint? Investigation into saints and the children’s prior knowledge. Week 2 - Researching different saints lesson Week 3 - Investigating the terms martyr and revered Week 4 - The impact saints have had on people’s lives and what they sacrificed. This is research on Martin Luther King and Mother Theresa. I used Twinkl comprehensions to help with this lesson. Week 5 - debate questions -Do you think Jesus is a saint? Should saints be dead before they are recognised? Do saints have to be believers in God? Week 6 - evaluation lesson There is a powerpoint for each lesson along with worksheets, planning and resources where relevant. This is a really enjoyable unit of work and I hope you enjoy teaching it as much as I do!

Based on David Attenborough’s ‘A Life on Our Planet’ I am creating a full English unit based on this programme on Netflix. Start off by showing your class the documentary. Before the documentary do a KWL grid to see what they know already. We also did a cover page in our books to start the unit. This is a 2 week module on writing an information text about an endangered animal. It includes: A Powerpoint to cover the two weeks Example texts Where to find grammar starters Success criteria and learning challenges Vocabulary list for the whole unit There will be a further 6 weeks of work to follow this module.

This is a summer reading challenge that is suitable for 9-10 year olds. They can work through it over the summer and return it to school when they come back in September. It is a great way to encourage reading and introduce children to new authors. This would be a great transition resource for children moving from year 4 into year 5. It is also a great home learning resource. The idea is the children colour in the smiley face once they have read the book. I hope you enjoy!
