When looking at the different properties of the different length hydrocarbon chains the practical demo I did was to show them 'short chain' alkanes and 'long chain' alkanes and compare the two. The students then wrote down the results a table which is shown in the lesson. They then calculated their speeds back int eh classroom (you could then get them to draw a bar graph of their results as practice for drawing graphs!). Homework in this lesson is a reverse crossword (a crossword in which the students have to think what the clues would be for each word) Learning Objectives: Recall the equation and formula triangle to calculate speed Calculate distance, time and speed using the equation

Has a fantastic (in my opinion) plenary using Lego characters to answer questions. The students collect different strips of paper with different questions and Lego parts to construct a Lego character, the students loved it! DIfferentiated questions throughout.
