Music Composer Research Project
Finally, here is a fun way for students to learn about composers!!! In this five-part unit, students engage in self-directed research about a composer of their choice to become class experts. They present the information they find in a creative manner and culminate with the creation of a parody of a folk tune based on their composer. This 8 page packet can be printed to hand out to pupils or projected, as you choose. My students loved working on this project and it took my Grade 5 pupils approximately 10 weeks to go from research to performing silly composer songs.
Included Activities:
Research on composers (using the Internet or other sources)
Creative presentation ideas
Presenting to the class
Composing a Silly Composer Song
Performing the Silly Composer Song
Music Notation, Pulse, and Rhythm Unit
Here is a 10 page printable student workbook for the young musician. This unit is designed to introduce students to the differences between rhythm and pulse and how to notate rhythms in various time signatures. Background information on each skill is provided along with numerous opportunities for listening, notation, composition, and performance tasks. As the unit progresses, the tasks are increasingly difficult. This unit generally takes between 10 and 14 weeks to complete with students depending on their age, musical ability, and the amount of time allowed for composition and performance tasks.
But just think, all your planning is basically done for the next 10 weeks! Take a break and have a cup of tea because you deserve it!
**There are 2 versions of this unit. One uses traditional British music vocabulary (i.e. crotchet, quaver, etc.) whereas the other uses quarter note, half note, etc. There is also an answer key included for your convenience.
Music and Art Integration Unit
Included in this unit is a printable student booklets for music (15 pages) and art (12 pages). Each features historical information, comprehension questions, rubrics for reference and grading, student reflection pages, and colorful photos. Lesson plans spanning 11 weeks are also included. In both art and music, students are asked to complete three projects; an introductory project, a cross-curricular project, and a skills-based project. Both units could easily be expanded time-wise should students require more time in which to work.
The focus in music is the work of Mussorgsky and how his music was influenced by the artwork of Victor Hartmann. After listening to some of Mussorgsky’s works, students will learn to play a melody by Mussorgsky and then work towards composing two pieces of music; one based upon a famous piece of art and one based upon art they create in art.
The focus in art is on the Impressionist movement. Students are asked to paint an Impressionist interpretation of one of Hartmann’s pieces of art. They are then asked to create their own piece of Impressionism which will be used at the end of the music unit. Finally, students create an Impressionist artwork based upon a song composed by Mussorgsky.
This is a great unit for those teacher interested in developing interdisciplinary practice or cross-curricular links in an integrated arts setting. Theoretically, the art and music units could stand alone with minor adjustments, but I would not recommend it as they have been designed to work in tandem.
Art and Music Unit
This is a complete unit that focuses on the links between Art and Music. Students explore the music of Modest Mussorgsky as he was influenced by the artwork of Victor Hartmann in Music and examine Impressionism and the links art has to music in Art.

4 Rhythm Games in 1
This is such a fun and colorful way to review rhythms for younger pupils! I have included 4 different activities, but you could probably expand the usage to more than that!
Activity 1: Sight reading
This is a powerpoint with 44 different rhythms using quarter notes and rests, eighth notes, and half notes. Each slide has a rhythm that can be displayed and is also played following a four-beat count-in.
Activity 2: Writing Rhythms
This activity is designed for pupils who are just beginning to write rhythms. Using the same rhythms as above, there is a printable worksheet that encourages developing 4/4 rhythms. As a bonus, students can perform their rhythms at the end!
Activity 3: Cut and Mix
Using the colorful owl rhythms, students can cut them out and re-arrange them to create a variety of different activities to support rhythm development. My students have used these cards as flashcards, as a starting point for drumming projects, and self-directed sight-reading, just to name a few!
Activity 4: Rhythm Bingo
There are 10 different bingo cards (and a blank one if you would prefer to have students write their own rhythms) included in this folder. Additionally, there is a powerpoint included that will play the rhythms for you (or a substitute teacher!) if you would prefer to walk around the classroom to support students. Students have a lot of fun playing rhythm bingo and enjoy the multiple ways to play.
I hope that you enjoy practicing rhythms!
