This lesson looks at place specific location of oceans and seas involving Atlas/ Google Maps work in labeling their own map. Further questions involving locational knowledge, sea routes and some questions on plate tectonics (sea floor spreading etc).

This lesson focuses on the issues surrounding shark fin soup, there is a question sheet to accompany the Gordon Ramsey documentary on it (easily found on YouTube) following this there are two tasks both with mark schemes and set instruction; making a poster writing a letter to restaurants urging them to take it off their menu. To teach everything in this lesson it should take 3-6 lessons depending on which tasks and the age/ ability of your class.

A lesson applicable to KS3 & KS4 that involves map skills and place specific tasks regarding countries around the Indian Ocean. Facts are added to the map and then the lesson culminates in several questions that piece together the evidence. The lesson includes YouTube links to video explanations of tsunami formation and footage of the Boxing Day tsunami. This usually takes 2 periods.

This contains 2 PowerPoints containing 60 questions (mostly about world events), one multiple choice and one without. 30 questions on big news events of 2018, 10 questions one famous people who passed away in 2018, 10 questions on 2018’s sporting events and 10 questions on pop culture in 2018. An answer sheet is also included. I have used this with Yr7-Yr13, generally the multiple choice one is more accessible for the students. Feel free to chop and change, Year 7 tend to get through 40 questions in a 50min period whereas Year 11+ tend to get through everything. The lowest score for a team of 4 in Year 7 was about 50%.

The main task is researched based and works best if students choose separate locations. In the past students have done locations such as Alcatraz, Robben island, the Cambodian Killing Fields, Pompeii, Death Railway, the wreck of the Titanic, 9/11 memorial and many more

There are skills tasks involving describing graphs and makes with peer assessment guides. Links are provided to a website so students can find out their own carbon footprint and questions to go along with Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Before the Flood’ documentary.

There is graph analysis at the beginning and then students make conclusions at the end. I would recommend students use Hans Roslings’ Gapminder website to access information
