A Social Narrative is an effective way to teach children how to navigate a new situation, such as starting school or preschool or in this instance, safely crossing the road. Social Narratives can help children understand what to expect at school or preschool and they can be used to support orientation, which is particularly useful when children and families are not able to be on-site.  Encouraging children to try using independence in problem solving in situations where safety is a prime concern, is a common social skill that needs to be frequently addressed.  As educators we need to explicitly teach these skills. The Island, by John Heffernan is a wonderful story about a blind boy who sees the beauty of the island he lives on, while the people around him cannot see it. A fantastic story with a link to a narration by the author. Some great links to accelerated literacy activities, and the theme of this booklet investigates our oceans and the threats to our marine life.
