A complete Unit of Work on Trigonometry (Sin, Cos and Tan). Covers finding missing lengths and angles of right-angled triangles. No Sine Rule or Cosine Rule included. Activities include: Measuring lengths of similar triangles to discuss/discover the ratios, identifying lengths of triangles (hypotenuse, opposite, adjacent), exact trigonometric identities (NEW to the 1-9 GCSE), rounding to 3 significant figures, choosing whether to use sin, cos or tan, choosing whether it's a trig question or Pythagoras and more. Lots of practice questions, all answers included and plenary type questions for each lesson/series of lessons. I have been using this with my Year 10 higher set 2 and has taken 6 lessons to complete - not rushing through it and taking the time to explain/cover misconceptions. Here is a starter I have used when teaching fractions/fractions of amounts. It involves working out the fraction of the cost of a PS3 various family members will pay towards a present. Could also be used as a plenary.

These are a series of revision lessons I have put together following a literacy exhibition lesson I observed. The idea is that you show the students the 1st slide on each & ask what is implied by the image - what could they be asked to do in a GCSE exam question if they were presented with that image? This is an IWB resource I created to go with my 'Mr Collins&' Table Sheets&'; resources. The idea is that I split my class into the two teams 'Collins City&' and &';Raymonds Rovers' and then using an inflatable football to play a &'match&'; of football with the class as a plenary activity; students answer questions to 'shoot&' or pass to another player. 'Sky Sports News&' style pwoerpoint slide. Here is a powerpoint I have created to communicate to my classes their learning objectives, key words, homework, lesson aim etc all on one slide. I put this up at the start of some of my lessons as the class are coming in. The lesson aim scrolls across the bottom of the screen when the presentation is up. I use a &';slide master' for this ppt and so if you want to change the layout etc it will need to be done on the slide master!

I used this question as a starter to consolidate learning of simultaneous equations with a top set year 10 class. Would work well as a plenary too? The question gets the students to form the simulatenous equations 1st based on a worded question using the characters from Finding Nemo!

Inspired by http://goo.gl/EUD8Mu I have created 20 Higher Tier h/w sheets for students aiming to get a C/B grade. The sheets alternate between non-calc and calc h/ws and will be used in Term 1 this year. I will then use some B/A grade h/w sheets (watch this space) in Term 2/3. These sheets are aimed at giving students revision of the topics needed to achieve C/B grades in their GCSEs.

Here is an idea I got from Paul Ginnis' &'Teachers Toolkit&';. The codebreaker task gets students to use their algebraic knowledge to crack a code. I put the code up on the IWB and hand out envelopes in groups of the equations for the groups to work on. Each letter corresponds to a number. Code revealed is 'Focus, Learn, Achieve&'.

I did a lesson on negative numbers using Golf. I gave the class an actual Golf score card that I had filled in from the local Golf Club and then got them to work out the scores for the Golfers. This gets the class using negative numbers both adding and subtracting them to work out the golfer's scores. I give the class a blank scorecard to stick in their books and they copy the details of the actual golf scorecard I give them on to this. The powerpoint explains to the class what a &'birdie&'; 'bogey&' etc are and how to calculate the scores.

Here's a starter task I created using Batman & Superman and Shrek é Donkey. The idea is for the class to use a Venn Diagram to compare the 2 superheroes/characters. I have used this as a starter to finding the HCF and LCM of 2 numbers as well as a starter to teaching Venn Diagrams

Another set of calling cards (Flashcards) I have used with my classes. This time the cards have the 3 trigonometric ratios. I put example questions on the board and then ask the class to put up the card which has the correct ratio on it that we would use in the question.

I have put together a set of templates for the diagrams students need to draw. In my experience they moan and groan about having to draw these and so these templates provide as a solution to this, and also differentiate for those that need help drawing the diagrams. Here I have a Pie Chart, Stem & Leaf, 2-way Stem é Leaf, Mean from Grouped Frequency Table, Frequency Density Table, Box Plot, and a 4 quadrant template. I have printed the required template as a handout so each student has a set of templates to use during the lesson.
