This is a challenging, engaging and enjoyable boardgame, for up to six pupils per set, with 54 question cards on the structure and differences between plant and animal cells and cell specialisation. The specialised cells included are: • red blood cells; • root hair cells; • fat cells; • palisade cells; • sperm cells; • egg cells; • nerve cells, • ciliated cells. Included in this Pack • Game board • 54 Question cards with questions of varying difficulty • Teacher answer sheet • Instruction sheet. Preparation • Photocopy game board onto A3 paper or card (Colour and greyscale versions included). • Photocopy question sheets onto paper or card (Colour and greyscale versions included) and cut into question cards. How to Play • Highest score of dice starts • Pupils take turns and work their way around the board following the instructions in the squares. • Certain squares instruct the pupil to take a question card from the face down pile. If correct they move on 2 spaces. • If a player thinks an answer given by an opponent is incorrect they can challenge. If the challenge is correct the challenger moves forward 2 spaces. If the challenge is wrong the challenger moves back two spaces. • In the event of a challenge, pupils are encouraged to consult their books but the teacher has a quick-check answer sheet. Finish and reinforce the KS3 cells module or revisit it prior to exams with this innovative, enjoyable and challenging escape room lesson. Prior knowledge required: • structure of plant and animal cells; • function of nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts, mitochondria; • differences between plant and animal cells; • recognise diagrams of and know the differences in specialised cells such as red blood cells, root hair cells, fat cells, nerve cells, palisade cells, egg cells, ciliated cells. Pupils have to work their way through the clues to find the code to a combination lock which has been set to the same code as one borrowed from the science department and used on the door of the walk – in freezer in the school kitchen. The school cook has now been accidentally locked in and the combination need to be found. The pack contains: • PowerPoint – scene setting and instructions (sound effects and built-in timer); • crossword; • word search; • dominoes activity; • worksheet (differentiated over two versions); • code breaker sheet; • answer keys; • lesson plan. If time is limited just the crossword, word search and domino can be used. With a minimum of 50 minutes available one of the differentiated worksheets can also be used. This lesson overs the structure of plant and animal cells, the differences between them and the function of cell organelles. What You Get Sheet for fact share activity Fact Sheet Smart Board Quiz - Question and answer PowerPoints Two worksheets – differentiated. Answer/mark scheme PowerPoint Sheet for pupils to record quiz answers Suggested lesson plan (one-page flow chart) Lesson structure With the question version of the quiz on the interactive whiteboard, pupils write their answers on their recording sheet. This quiz has a built-in timer for each question but the teacher has control of movement between slides to move from question to question. The answer version of the quiz is then put on the IWB and pupils mark their answers. This version also shows the questions so it is easy for the teacher to go through any explanations necessary. The facts on the fact sheet are mapped to the question numbers in the quiz. Pupils now match and colour on the fact sheet, the numbers of the questions they had wrong on the pupil recording sheet. They then have, to take away with them, a clear and permanent record of facts to be learned. Pupils then tackle the worksheet which is differentiated over two versions. Finish and reinforce the KS3 current electricity module or revisit it prior to exams with this innovative, enjoyable and challenging escape room lesson. Prior knowledge required: • current, voltage and resistance – defining and understanding, units, measuring; • circuits and symbols; • series and parallel circuits – current, voltage, switches, lamps; • current and voltage varying with number of batteries; • Ohms Law. Pupils have to work their way through the clues to find the code to a box with a combination lock containing an antidote to a substance, accidentally ingested by the laboratory. The substance is the departments a prototype, orally administered sunscreen being developed by the department which has unfortunately been found to turn the skin of mice purple and which has not yet been tested on humans and is also therefore potentially toxic. The pack contains: • PowerPoint – scene setting and instructions (sound effects and built-in timer); • crossword; • word search; • dominoes activity; • worksheet Differentiated over 2 versions); • code breaker sheet; • answer keys; • lesson plan. If time is limited just the crossword, word search and domino can be used. With a minimum of 50 minutes available one of the differentiated worksheets can also be used. The worksheet is the most challenging clue to solve and this can be omitted completely for less able classes. Both 3 and 4 number combination locks can be purchased very cheaply online if using an actual box containing an unopened bottle of a soft drink, with the label removed, for a member of the winning team to take to the technician. In the absence of a locked box, until the code is found, as each group completes a team member can be dispatched to the prep room for the technician to ”try the code”. Alternatively all the combination locks in the science department had been set to the same combination for an escape room lesson including the one used on the box with the antidote in the prep room. The combination has been lost but if the class can open the one in front of them it will open the one on the antidote! The module is available as money-saving bundles or individual topics. This action-packed lesson on specialised cells is fully resourced and differentiated with 12 activities and 7 learning outcomes. Pupils will learn to identify the differences between specialised cells and typical cells and explain how that difference equips the specialised cell to perform their particular function. Specialised cells studied are chloroplasts, red blood cells, fat cells, nerve cells, root hair cells, ciliated cells, sperm cells and egg cells. Easy to follow instructions are given on the PowerPoint and worksheets so that the lesson practically runs itself. Activities include literacy, group work, peer assessment, self-assessment, pupil response to assessment, and feedback to the teacher on pupil learning via the exit ticket quiz. This pack contains material for two hours lesson time to enable teachers to select resources to totally bespoke their lesson according to pupil ability, time available for the topic and focus of departmental/school policy. A comprehensive and enjoyable fully resourced lesson on shadows and lunar and solar eclipses for middle school. What’s Covered The shadow of a point source only has an umbra but the shadow of a large point source has an umbra and a penumbra. If the light source moves closer to the object, the shadow gets bigger. If the object moves closer to the screen, the shadow gets smaller . A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth stops all, or some, of the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon. The Moon orbits the Earth once every 29.5 days. When the entire moon passes through the Earths penumbra it appears slightly darker (penumbral eclipse). If only part of the moon passes through the Earth’s umbra it is a partial eclipse. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon stops all, or some, of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth A person on Earth, standing in the Moon’s umbra will see a total solar eclipse. A person on Earth, standing in the Moon’s penumbra will see a partial solar eclipse. When the Moon is at its furthest point from Earth, it no longer covers the whole surface of the Sun and an annular eclipse is seen from the umbra. The Moon’s orbit is angled relative to the Earth so the Sun, Earth and Moon are not often in the alignment needed for a lunar Eclipse to occur. When the entire moon passes through the Earths umbra it appears red due to refracted red light (total or umbral eclipse). Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. A comprehensive and enjoyable explanation of the relationship between mass and weight. What’s Covered All objects attract each other and that the attraction force depends on the size of the object. The attraction force of planets is called gravity which acts towards the centre. Gravity hold Earth’s atmosphere in place. Mass is the amount of material in a body, is measured in kilograms (Kg) and is independant of position. Weight is the effect of gravity pulling on a mass. Units for gravitational field strength are N/Kg. Applying W = m x g to calculate weight of a body on Earth, the Moon and Jupiter. A dominoes game for middle school with questions and statements on the reactions of acids with metals, bases and carbonates instead of numbers. Prior Knowledge Acids contain hydrogen. A salt is formed when the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal. Hydrochloric acid forms salts called chlorides Sulfuric acid forms salts called sulfates. Nitric acid forms salts called nitrates. metal + acid --> a salt + hydrogen base + acid --> a salt + water alkali + acid --> a salt + water carbonate + acid -->a salt + water + carbon dioxide The first part of a salt is the metal and the second comes from the acid. Rules of the Game Each player selects seven dominoes from the top of the face-down pile and holds them in their hand like playing cards. The player whose surname begins with a letter closest to the letter A starts and play proceed in a clockwise direction. Dominoes can be matched exactly, or a name can be matched with a symbol or descriptions, sketches and circuit diagrams can be matched. If a player thinks a match is wrong, they can challenge. If the challenger is correct, they give a card from their own hand to the challenged player. If the challenged player is correct, they give a card from their hand to the challenger. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer and consult their teacher if a consensus is not reached. A fantastic back to school or end of year activity which is ideal for welcoming students back from lockdown and starting to rebuild community. It is a team activity which can easily be undertaken by students while meeting the requirements of social distancing and there is a reminder to so at the beginning of each team round. It is a 61 question, animated, interactive team quiz with built – in scoreboard for up to seven teams. All questions are pictorial and multiple choice. A wide range of general knowledge questions and tasks are included. As well as asking a question, a lot of slides also provide some interesting snippets about the topic so pupils are expanding their general knowledge as well as enjoying the activity. Topics include: geography history nature science music astrology astronomy flags of the world famous people famous landmarks current affairs Team Rounds Each team will attempt their general knowledge team round of three questions. The answer to each question must be decided by the whole team. If a wrong answer is given, the next question goes to the first hand up and, if correct, that person’s team get to try the rest of the round. Each team will also have to solve the clues to identify a well - known phrase or saying. There are four lightning rounds in which team members consult to try to identify a slowly revealed person or landmark. Memory Test – questions on the order and detail of eleven objects which cross the screen then disappear. Individual Rounds Four unscramble and identify rounds which consists of a picture which has been cut up and rearranged. Memory Test – give coordinates of fish which have moved around a pond. Finally, the fifteen - question individual bonus round. This round allows flexibility in terms of the time the quiz takes as not all the questions have to be attempted. Finish and reinforce a middle school module on reflection, refraction and lenses or revisit it prior to exams with this innovative, enjoyable and challenging escape room lesson. Students must work their way through the clues to find the code to a combination lock on the school storeroom where Molly, a pupil’s dog, has been accidentally locked after following the child to school and while the school secretary phones home. Prior Knowledge Required Transparent, translucent and opaque materials Luminous and non-luminous objects Labelling the incident and reflected rays, the angles of incidence and reflection, the normal and the point of incidence Ray diagram showing how the eye sees an image in a plane mirror and in a periscope. The image formed in a plane mirror is upright, virtual (appears to be formed behind the mirror) laterally inverted, the same size as the object and as far behind the mirror as the object is in front. Specular and diffuse images The more dense the medium the slower the speed of light. When light travels from a less dense medium to a more dense medium it is bent towards the normal. Light hitting a boundary at ninety degrees is not refracted nor at a curved boundary. Why lightning is seen before thunder is heard when a cloud discharges. Real and apparent depth Ray diagrams showing refraction in a concave and convex lens. Convex lenses are used in magnifying glasses, telescopes and spectacles to correct long sight. Label the following structures on a diagram of the eye; retina; ciliary muscle; iris; pupil; lens; suspensory ligament; optic nerve. Ray diagrams to show how the eye sees distant and close objects. Ray diagrams to show how lenses are used to correct long and short sight. How the iris controls the size of the pupil and therefore the amount of light which enters the eye. The pinhole camera and the camera and compare with the eye. If time is limited just the crossword, word search and domino can be used. The worksheet is the most challenging clue to solve and this can be omitted completely for less able classes. Preparation Photocopy Board onto A3 paper or card (Colour and greyscale versions included). How to Play Highest score of dice starts Pupils take turns and work their way around the board following the instructions in the squares. Certain squares indicate that the pupil takes a question card from the face down pile. If correct they move on 2 spaces. If a player thinks an answer given by an opponent is incorrect they can challenge. If the challenge is correct the challenger moves forward 2 spaces.
