Empire lesson. Good for an introduction into Indian Empire.

An easy to follow lesson on Titanic. Students review pieces of evidence and categorise and organise this these into a diamond 9 (or score each piece of evidence) to determine who they think was to blame for the Titanic disaster. They follow this up with a report writing activity to explain their theory and also to offer suggestions on how future disasters might be avoided. Students work through a card sort and a diamond 9 activity to determine the key factors in the German invasion of France. They write up their findings in a report template which develops their literacy skills by asking them to select the best evidence to support their findings. This lesson looks at the different ethnic/ political groups who moved to Whitechapel during the 19th century. Students extract information and add it to a matrix before determining which group they believe posed the greatest threat to the police in Whitechapel. A source based question supports the knowledge from this lesson and draws on content from the previous lesson re source skills and types of evidence. All resources and activities are included in a printable work booklet

I use this lesson as an introduction to history with all KS3 classes. Students are invited to pull objects from a bag and analyse the evidence before writing up their findings. This would also work well as a tutor time activity.

Students start by adding detail to a never heard the word grid which cover the unit. They then start to collect evidence to show how the Nazis influenced people's lives. They must decide how this would impact Jewish people living in Germany by matching their evidence to a range of categories. This is followed by a postcard activity whereby students write to a pen friend to outline how and why their lives are changing. Literacy support provided as well as step by step instructions and differentiated resources.

The third lesson from the Edexcel Superpower relations and the Cold War GCSE course. Students continue to set the tone for the origins of the Cold war as they learn about the key differences between capitalism and communism through a debate. They then plot the key countries that followed each system on a world map before recapping their knowledge in a plenary. As always there are clear instructions and high-quality resources.

The first lesson in our Cold War unit. This enquiry acts as an introductory overview to the Cold War unit. This lesson allows your students to work out what the Cold War was and where it happened. It is always important to see the big picture before exploring the content. A classic introductory overview your students will look at a number images from events across the period 1945-72. They will match captions to the images to work out what was going on.This will help define what the Cold War was and plot on a map where the main flash points happened and work out what they can learn from each caption/image. A report task with a literacy focus concludes the lesson. A unit checklist/ self assessment document is included too. A lesson with a range of activities to develop the knowledge required for reforms to prisons in the 20th century (young offenders and purpose of changes to legislation). The resources includes information sheets, a range of activities, such as mind mapping and analysing the reasons for reforms to the prison system in the 20th century.

A booklet containing a range of activities about life in the trenches during World War One. The activities look at the kit a soldier had to carry, the problems faced on the Western Front (source analysis and creative thinking task), daily routine activity and a No Man's Land task. The final activity requires the students to use their knowledge to create a trench survival guide for new recruits. This can be used for a sequence of lessons or as an independent project/ homework task. I teach this over 3 lessons (2 weeks). The lessons run themselves.

Handy structure strips that cover all the different types of questions (Edexcel GCSE 9-1, Paper 2 ). I use these for the Superpower Relations and Cold War Unit. They are very useful when preparing students for exam preparation, assessments and writing up questions in lessons. The students also use these to make their own structure strips for revision.I cut out the literacy support and stick this to the reverse of the strip for students to use when they need help with introducing evidence/ examples and phrases for explaining. The case study for the Edexcel History GCSE crime and punishment until. Lesson includes a worksheet and tasks which covers all of the required knowledge for the case study ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ and its implications for Catholics in the period 1500-1700 as set out in the specification.

Students begin by creating a fact file about the event (directed and differentiated). They then look at several reasons why Japan might have attacked Pearl Harbour. They need to sort these reasons into categories or factors that motivated the attack. They eventually decide which factor was key and link this to the best supporting evidence before writing up their findings in a telegram. Literacy support and differentiated resources included as well as clear step by step instruction.

Easy to follow lesson on the witch trials in Lancaster. Students use a card sort to try and solve various problems such as the long and short term causes of the executions, their main factor, establishing links and so on. After they have written up a response to this enquiry, the next activity looks at the decline in witchcraft and the reasons for this for example the enlightenment, the actions of Charles II. One of the activities requires use of a textbook (either Pearson or Hodder).
