Lesson one for the Edexcel Crime and Punishment Historic Environment unit. The lesson looks at the nature and impact of poor housing conditions and the attempts to improve housing and provision for the poor. Students research this through a range of sources. After extracting evidence they need to determine its influence on crime and decide upon the worst aspects of life in Whitechapel. The last lesson in the Crime and Punishment Unit of Work. Students learn about the significance of the Bentley execution by assessing evidence and different points of view regarding the details of the case. An active student led lesson with a range of activities with an extended response question.

The case study knowledge for the period 1900 - present which looks at conscientious objectors and their treatment by the government and the public. Students should be able to give examples of CO treatment and explain government actions. The lesson also includes a 4 mark question which compares the crime of heresy and COs (support material and activities sets up the exam question).

A lesson with a range of activities to develop the knowledge required for reforms to prisons in the 20th century (young offenders and purpose of changes to legislation). The resources includes information sheets, a range of activities, such as mind mapping and analysing the reasons for reforms to the prison system in the 20th century.

A lesson on the changes to the death penalty in the 20th century. Students analyse the laws/ changes and assess the reasons for these changes in law, which they attempt to attribute to a factor e.g. individuals. They must also decide which factors are most important and respond to an exam style question. They use the factor cards to complete a living timeline on the changes to capital punishment during the period of study. There is also an activity which looks at 3 controversial executions in this time period and the significance of these.

The first lesson for the last unit (C1900-present: crime, punishment and law enforcement in recent times). An easy to follow lesson which introduces students to a range of crimes (some new and some old but carried out using new methods). Students are issued with one crime which they use to make a teaching poster. They then teach other students about their crime. Plenty of opportunity for discussion e.g. which factors have influenced present day crime the most etc. There is a table to complete for 12 crimes before an exam style question.

Easy to follow lesson which examines the penal and police reforms led by Robert Peel. Students create a fact file, analyse the reasons for penal reforms, assess the success of the peelers based on a card sort and ranking activity (differentiated) with various extension tasks to challenge the more able and an exam style question.

Case study looking at pentonville Prison in the later half of the 19th century. Students are initially introduced to images and information about the supermax prison cells used in USA and they need to identify how they are designed to reform inmates. Following this they need to annotate various images about Pentonville to explain how the separate system was designed to operate.

A lesson that focuses on the changes to policing in the period 1700-1900, which sets students up for a question 6 style question (Policing became much more effective in the period 1700-1900’. How far do you agree? ). This lesson includes a card sort and diamond 9 activity, activities linked to the changes and continuity of policing in the period, an activity that requires students to assess a response to the question and outline what went well and even better if, an exam style question and literacy support. An easy to follow lesson on the development of law enforcement 1700-1900. Students are introduced to some mug shots (use of technology) and have to match criminals to their crime. The main task is creating a detailed timeline to show the key developments to law enforcement for the period ( a success criteria, key questions and headings are given on the powerpoint). Following this students will need to create a cartoon strip to show how policing has changed since 1700 (town watchmen etc). The plenary looks at the changing role of local communities throughout the whole period of study. This lesson is great preparation for a Q6 practice. Lesson 20 of our Edexcel Crime and Punishment Unit. A lesson on the work of Fry and Howard and the subsequent changes to prisons. Students are introduced to some sources about the use and condition of prisons in the 17th century, which they analyse and use as evidence to comment on the state of prisons. They then work through a range of activities such as creating a fact file, a research task on Fry and Howard. Once they have secured their knowledge of the work of the reformers they begin to link their work to prisons changes and write up how their work affected prisons in the period. All resources are differentiated with literacy support and prompts.

A lesson on the key factors that led to the end of public executions in 1868. Students anaylse an image of a public execution and complete a was sheet with four different activities. Following this they extract key factors from a worksheet and determine which factors they feel were most significant in ending public executions through a table activity which they use to create a mind map. There is a source based question to develop skills and deploy knowledge before resounding to an exam style question (literacy support included). Students work through a card sort and prioritising activity to gain the necessary knowledge before analysing a 12 mark explain question. Students create a top tip fact file based on a student friendly mark scheme, they attempt to decide on a mark for an example response before writing up the question. What does the case of the Tolpuddle Martyrs tell us about crime and punishment in the early 19th century? The Tolpuddle Martyrs lesson requires students to complete a worksheet based on a video clip about the event which forms the case study for the period. There is an information sheet which includes the necessary information for the spec. Students use and information sheet to add additional knowledge before analysing the event to determine its importance in the history of crime and punishment.

A lesson on the growth of highway robbery, poaching and smuggling and then the eventual decline of these crimes. Students work through a range of activities such as card sorts, prioritising information before they complete a matrix exercise and respond to a 12 mark exam question using the lesson’s knowledge and skills to explain how crimes increased and subsequently decreased in the period 1700-1900. A key term grid with all the key vocabulary for the period 1700-1900 is included.
