One way is to collectively designate the instruments to each of the the 4 Wind in the willows characters.Then, choose a leader for , say, the woodblock, ask them to play something to represent their chosen character, and then let the others copy it.. This is a useful little video that I have edited. It's from 'It&'s a bugs life ' The ants collect food and later celebrate . The video explores each aspect, the lifting, throwing, carrying, marching ,flying etc. I&';m using it for movement, but you could use it for Harvest festival, literacy , poetry etc . We are using it in our mini beasts topic. Children can make props for their foraging. We drew fruit and cut it out. We staggered under the weight and deposited the 'fruit' on our 'mountain '

Children are encouraged to look at the movement of the machines and from that observation, gain clues as to the type of sound, pitch or rhythm could be used. A simple technique for making up a song using the names of the fruit in the book 'Handa's surprise' It looks attractive too. You could scan them into a powerpoint so all the children can sing or play each others work. This will work with fruit or animals in the topic whether or not you are doing 'Handa&'s surprise'
