3.4 Volcanoes - Eyjafjallajökull Iceland
A fully resourced lesson which covers volcano types including cinder cones, shield volcanos, stratovolcanoes and fissure vents. The lesson then conducts a case study on the 2010 volcano in Eyjafjallajökull. Activities include labelling a diagram of volcano types, differentiating between the characteristics of a stratovolcano and shield volcano, compiling a fact file on the E15 eruption and as a plenary, watching a video on super volcanoes. This is the final lesson in a sequence on tectonics.
3.3 Tsunamis - Japan 2011
A fully resourced lesson which covers tsunamis including, earthquake, volcano, erosion and meteor tsunamis with a section on the ring of fire. The lesson then conducts a case study on the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Activities include labelling a diagram of tsunami types, creating a disaster recovery plan using a budget, a gap fill activity and an ordering worksheet.
3.2 Plate Boundaries and Earthquakes
A fully resourced lesson which covers plate boundaries and hazards including constructive, destructive and conservative boundaries (San Andreas fault). The lesson then goes on to study the causes and impacts of earthquakes. Activities include labelling a diagram of an earthquake, matching vocabulary to its definition, ordering the events of an earthquake and as a plenary playing a, earthquake board game. This is lesson 2 of 4 in a sequence on tectonics.
3.1 The Earth's Layers and Tectonic Plates
A fully resourced lesson which covers the Earths’ structure, tectonic plates, including continental and oceanic plates and convection currents underneath the asthenosphere. Activities include labelling a diagram of the earths structure, comparing oceanic and continental plates, completing a jigsaw puzzle of tectonic plates and a board game plenary. This is an introduction to a 4-lesson sequence on tectonics.
