Hi there! I'm both an English and Geography teacher in London. I am currently working in an Outstanding school which is my second Outstanding school of my career in London after teaching in both Ireland and the Middle East. My resources are both English & Geography resources where I like to give the student an active role in their learning. It is done by many activities such as Q&A sessions, exercises, group/pair-work and many others.

Writing a Haiku

This PowerPoint and remote learning instructions introduces Haikus in a simple way. It is for remote learning during the lockdown. The ‘Do Now’ exercise tests students’ prior knowledge on syllables as this is required. It then shows students an example of a Haiku, going through the structure and language. Students are then asked to watch a YouTube video for the process and then asked to create their own Haiku. The plenary is to create their own ‘Lockdown Haiku’ which can be emailed to you and the chosen winners will be on a format like Padlet.

This lesson introduces George as a character in Of Mice and Men. Similar to the character of Lennie, we focus on how Steinbeck uses language to describe George. This is done through dual coding, reading and discussion throughout the lesson. Lesson one shows students the context of Northern Ireland and a how ‘The Troubles’ impacted Longley. It also gives students an introduction to the poem and by completing various tasks. Lesson 2 analyses the poem in more detail in terms of both language and structure. It allows students to form their own opinion of the meaning of the poem through probing questions. Both of these lessons were used for remote learning but can easily be used in the classroom also.

Banquo’s Ghost scene is one of the key scenes within Macbeth. This lesson allows students to imagine they are 1) Banquo’s Ghost and 2) The Attendants at the Banquet. This is done by a visual aspect via a video where it allows the students feel as if they are present. They also have to highlight Lady Macbeth’s role in this scene before close analysis of the scene in pairs.

This PowerPoint introduces students to the context behind the poem wounds and also the poet. The students complete a ‘Do Now’ and then assess their prior knowledge of Northern Ireland which then leads into discussion. They are given a background to the poet before observing the poem after completing a mini task relating to the title. There is also a YouTube video relating to Bloody Sunday which gives students a visual before completing a task on their first impressions of the poem. This is the first lesson from two where the poem will be analysed in detail-language and structure. *NB: To make this more student friendly, the comment on the Pope was removed-this can be changed at your own discretion.
