Mathematical thinking task. The Tour de France is the greatest and most demanding annual sporting event. Most activities are starters and many have links to clips on sites like Youtube. Hopefully these will promote mathematical communication in lessons - add comments below on how you have used them or any ideas on how to develop further.

GCSE D to C Borderline Revision Questions

Bank of exam questions made into a revision booklet and used during Intervention Days. All are old syllabus exam questions but afford good practice - plenty of transformations too. Sadly no answers - sorry but as largely Foundation Tier shouldn't be an issue...

Bearings - lesson resources - KS3/GCSE

(9)
Bearings lesson with cartoon characters. I find bearings a very dry maths topic which is important and needs enlivening! Two worksheets, (watch out for printer settings - the distances may need adjusting!). After working through the two sheets I give out two copies of one of the other sheets and ask them to plan a route on one map and write instructions which they then swap with a classmate with the blank map for the other to see if the 'directions' work. Maths Assembly - Preparation for GCSE Exam

(11)
Maths assembly powerpoint. As a Head of Maths I am regularly asked to give an assembly on how to revise for maths. I have developed the attached powerpoint, over the years to assist - the first 10 slides I have showing as the students come in - they are timed to move on every 30 seconds or so, and then the rest I use to talk through how to revise and also what to look for in exams. One of the files has the error to 'wake up students' - on reflection I shouldn't have shared that. I have taken my my school's logos off.

Plan a day at the 2012 Olympics

(2)
How many of us spent an age planning what we were going to watch before applying for tickets for the games? This activity asks the students to plan a day at the Olympics (1st August 2012), and looks at the students leaving Swansea in time to be in London. Up to you if you want to change this! I picked somewhere a good distance from London! I am tempted to do this on computers - lots of links on the 2012 website to look at travelling. Something different - part of the Maths 2012 Olympics resources in 3 areas in my resources.

Maths Gas Meter Reading Calculations

(3)
An activity (updated 1st March after a run through with a year 10 class) which will enable the class teacher to briefly explain how to read a gas meter and in basic terms show students how the bill is calculated. A powerpoint will help you walk though it and there is a work sheet to accompany it. Hope it proves useful! Took about an hour to work through, and I set a homework for the students to go away and discuss with their parents how they pay for their gas and electricity and get the parents to explain the bills - students to present back!

6 Nations Rugby Maths - Misleading Graphs

(4)
This starter is based on a statistics page from the Telegraph for the France v England fixture which makes use of pie charts. Are the pie charts as presented a fair way of presenting the data of England's 53 wins compared to France&'s 37? A starter that you can use as a point to start discussing misleading graphs. In the past I have had students scour papers to create a misleading graphs display for me.
