I use one of these as a ‘summer project’ so a small project the students undertake at the end of year 1 to prepare them for year 2. It’s based on the 2016 CPLD spec Ext Nat Dip & ext Nat Cert Unit 2: Supporting Children’s communication, Literacy and Numeracy development, which is an externally assesssed exam. It has 3 different elements; something for the students to read, then watch and then do. Source is from the Department for Education, so extremely reliable. I use the other one for open events for the T-Level in Education and Early Years. It gives them an insight into content, with direct relevance to element 8 Observation & Assessment. There is an opportunity for the students to learn about different observations, practise 2 different types based on a video clip and then map their findings to the Birth to Five Matters. Maths embedded also, by converting years into months and then cross referencing this to the ranges.

Extended National Diploma, 2016 spec Teaching for learning aims A & B Includes all lesson materials and assignment guidance, that goes towards Task 1. All powerpoints have a multitude of activities for the students to complete as well as teacher led content. Examples of activities include; reviewing the Winterbourne View case video clips and righting wrongs, unscrambling words, case studies, making notes on good practice from reliable sources such as Social Care Institute for Excellence, extending vocabulary, ethics quiz, research tasks etc All teaching is applied to the brand new Pearson case studies; R and Jim, however all content can be adapted to fit the old case studies too. The specification states that there should be examples specific to your local geographical area, mine relates to the Greater Manchesters area, but my examples can be substituted with others. This resource supports the 2016 Health and Social Care specification, National Extended Diploma. It is a PowerPoint with 86 slides and x3 accompanying handouts, it covers all teaching and learning for learning aims C&D. There is an array of tasks set within the PowerPoint such as; 10 and 15 minute challenges relating to the students chosen health promotion, the creation of wordclouds to aid memory and to help the student embed key terminology, Q&A, research tasks, summaries following on from reading articles and watching videos, matching models/theories to specific examples, class debate on media and public health, reflection exercises, group tasks etc. Specific links made to the assessment criteria for learning aims C&D. The British Values are promoted within this resource also and English and maths skills are also supported.

The Ext Nat Dip Health & Social Care Course; 2016 spec. Everything required to complete Unit 17 Task 2. Covers key content for learning aim C; C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5. Included is a powerpoint with multiple activities/exercises for the students to complete and task guidance for the students to be able to complete the assessment criteria. All answers are evidenced on the marking schemes/examiners reports on Pearson’s website. Focus on paired work - think-pair-share, retrieval and practice to get students fluent and confident. ‘Solve & switch’ activity - based on 8 mark questions (‘discuss’) Students choose a question from the deck, answer it, repeat process with other cards and then compare with their peers answers. Finally compare with marking scheme/examiners report. (Look at similarities/differences/misconceptions/gaps in knowledge etc) ‘Chat stations’ activity - x5 chat stations all multi-coloured. Focus on samples from examiners reports. These are to be pinned up around the room and in pairs students ‘chat’ about the marks they feel should be awarded and then compare with marking schemes/examiner reports and discuss in pairs how they could further improve the answers. ‘Roll & recall’ activity - You will need dice for this. The students roll the dice and then recall what’s requested of them on the instruction card. Repeat until students have exhausted all knowledge of your chosen theorist/theory. Could be used for Unit 2 CPLD too.

Consolidation of teaching and learning for 12 and 14 mark questions; analyse and evaluate command verbs, for the Unit 1: Children’s Development unit, for the 2016 spec for Nat Dip and Ext Cert groups. A3 sheets focusing on key content, key vocab, specific examples and key theorists relating to specific topics such as for 12 mark questions: exercise, diet, sleep and living in a remote area and for 14 mark questions: transitions, key person, interventions and poverty.
