I started a learning sequence about mixed and improper fractions with this introductory lesson. The lesson focusses on recapping what a fraction is visually and clarifying that there are proper, improper and mixed fractions.

I use the bar model to write what fraction can be seen, both as a mixed fraction and an improper fraction, so that children can clearly see that they can be written as both.

Children are then given an improper fraction or mixed fraction and asked to colour it in on a bar model or create their own diagram.

The lesson includes a flipchart (Activinspire) and a task (3 parts).

If you would prefer the flipchart to be exported to Powerpoint, please let me know!
