A medium term plan for KS1 children for the Explorers unit. This unit will cover the understanding of significant individuals as stated in the National Curriculum by looking at a range of key explorers from the World. There is a range of different explorers in this plan so that comparisons can be drawn between them.

This medium term plan covers 6 lessons which are broken down into:

  2. Historical Concepts
  3. Key Vocabulary
  4. Hook
  5. Learning
  6. Task
  7. Plenary

The lessons will cover:

  1. What is an Explorer?
  2. Ibn Battuta
  3. Christopher Columbus
  4. Ernest Shackleton
  5. Amelia Earhart
  6. Neil Armstrong
  7. Bonus! Tim Peake

As you can see the children will learn about the Islamic explorer Ibn Battuta who explored the world on horseback, Christopher Columbus who explored on the sea, Ernest Shackleton who explored the South Pole, Amelia Earhart by air and both Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake by space!
