This lesson teaches children about the history of Teddy Bears and how they have changed over time, this includes their design and materials. The lesson also teaches children about the origins of the Teddy Bear and why they were first created. Samuel Pepys’ diary is a key source for historians today in knowing what happened during the Great Fire of London. Pepys was able to describe the feel of London at that time and it is crucial that children learn about him. In this session we have taken extracts of Samuel’s diary for the teacher to read to the children for them to hear first hand what Samuel wrote. Prior to this it is clearly explained to the children what a diary is and why it is important that we have Samuel’s diary today. This lesson will ask the children to act as historical detectives and work out the clues as to why they think the bakery was the cause of the fire. With schools moving increasingly towards a positive regard/restorative practice to behaviour in classrooms, it is key that staff are reminded of the core questions behind restorative conversations. When children have had an incident it is key that adults ask the right questions to understand why that child has made the choice that they have. That’s where this resource is helpful.
