KS3/4 - Writing Exam Training SOS for Struggling Students (for GCSE - Edexcel/AQA)

N.B. This lesson is designed to work in preparation for/immediately after a mock Spanish Writing Exam, with particular reference to open-response style questions. The question created for the lesson relates to the Edexcel exam board, but this lesson can be equally used in preparation for composing open-responses for the AQA exam board. It should be noted that as this lesson focuses on developing lower-ability students’ capacity to write, as well as building up their self-esteem, word limit have been intentionally left out.

• Lesson includes step-by-step activities to get students accustomed and prepared for different parts of the exam, including understanding the instructions, working out which tenses to use, learning formula to use in the exam etc.
• Slides include tips and advice for students as well as teachers.
• Differentiation provided in slides, including support for lower ability and extension tasks.
• Open-response writing is a component of both the Foundation and Higher tier papers.
• This can easily be used with upper KS3 or KS4.
• Lesson is up-to-date and corresponds to the new Grades 9-1 GCSE.
• Lesson provides a ‘Writing Support Sheet’ for students to use as a resource in their book. This will help them use key verbal phrases in past, present and future tenses, which helps them gain higher marks for linguistic accuracy as per the GCSE mark schemes (if students do not successfully reference past, present and future, they are restricted to 2 marks).
• All printable resources are included as hidden slides in the lesson PowerPoint.
• The exam questions relate to the topics of free time and sport.
