This resource can be used for a lesson or series of lessons on Eurovision for a Spanish class with lots of discussion opportunities to learn more about Ukraine (last year’s Eurovision winners and who should have been hosting).
Would work particularly well with Y9 and GCSE to get them using more interesting opinions but can be adapted for any year really and tasks are differentiated throughout to accommodate different abilities and levels.
It’s a great scheme of work to use for Media/Culture topics (Music) and for writing with opinions. I have used a variation of this resource many times over the last few years and it has always gone down really well with students! They have lots of fun with this while learning a lot
Resources include:
- Powerpoint
- Sweepstake of countries to cut out and distribute to students for them to follow their sweepstake country
PLEASE NOTE! There’s a lot of information and ‘teacher heads up’ in the presenter notes. Be sure to have the presenter notes showing when you try out this lesson, to do so in Powerpoint go to: VIEW->Show presenter notes
Activities include:
- Sweepstake - students to follow their selected country for homework
- A discussion about the contest and why the host country is the UK this year.
- Eurovision countries - how to say in Spanish
- Facts and Figures match up about UK/Spain/Ukraine (2 differentiated tasks, choose depending on overall ability of the group
- Quiz about Ukraine
- Ukrainian-Spanish vocabulary task to demonstrate difference in alphabet
- Cuban/Spanish slang translation task (last year’s entrant for Spain was actually from Cuba)
- Examples of previous iconic Eurovision performances followed by discussion of what makes a performance successful (or otherwise!)
- Discussion about UK & Ukraine’s performances last year and why they did well
- Chance to listen/watch each song entry for this year’s competition, students can give each performance a mark out of 12, and then do Spanish writing practice using opinions.
