English Structure Analysis

English Structure Analysis

(0)
This set of resources gives you everything you need to teach students how to analyse writers’ use of structure for the English Language GCSE. It is aimed specifically at AQA students, highlighting the requirements of their Mark Scheme by focusing on ‘whole-text’ structure. However, it will also be extremely helpful in teaching non-AQA students the basics of structure. This group of resources has been several years in the making and I feel confident that it will become an essential part of your English Language exam preparation. Pacing obviously depends on your class, but I would estimate that there is at least eight hours of work included here. The contents are as follows: Four PDF presentations, ranging from 34 to 42 slides. Each presentation examines one extract in depth, showing students exactly how to write a comprehensive response to a Structure Analysis question. They include a focus on either four or five structural features, with a model answer paragraph on each aspect. They also feature an in-depth examination of the AQA Mark Scheme for the Structure Analysis questions, showing students exactly how to maximise their marks. Student Extract Booklets – these two booklets are differentiated: Booklet 2 is for less able students and contains hints as to what structural features are used in each extract. Booklet 1 is for more able students and features the extract without any helpful hints. Sample Answer Booklet – this contains the full completed sample answer for each extract. It is very useful for asking students to identify the various aspects of the answer. Structural Techniques Grid – this allows students to record information and examples of the various structural features discussed in the four extracts. It is ideal for homework or revision. I hope these resources are helpful for you and instructive for your students – as always, I’d be delighted to hear any feedback you may have. I will be adding lots more English Language revision resources to my shop so please check back regularly!

Edexcel Time and Place Poetry

This is a fantastic student workbook which can be used from the beginning of Y10 GCSE English Literature. Completing the activities in their own workbook allows students to take ownership of the poems they are studying and increases their familiarity and comfort with each poem. Please note that this doesn’t contain any notes or analysis of the poems: instead, it’s a workbook created for students to complete. The workbook consists of a series of unnumbered pages, so that you can choose the order that best suits your class. The contents are as follows: 1. Front Cover – this page allows space for the student’s name/class details. 2. Assessment Objectives and Exam Information – this page gives a clear, concise explanation of exactly how the AOs are rewarded in the Mark Scheme, showing your students exactly what they need to do to gain marks. It also explains the format, layout and mark structure of the poetry section. 3. Previous Questions - the poems and questions that have featured on the exam papers since 2017. 4. Poems and Poets – a full list of all the poems in your selection. 5. Sound Effects and Visual Effects – a superb examination of eight of the most common language techniques used by poets. Each section explains clearly what the technique is and gives a variety of quotations to illustrate this to the students. This is an excellent revision aid that students can use at any point in the year. 6. Your Sound Effects and Visual Effects – these two pages feature grids for students to fill in as the year progresses, allowing them to note and thus memorise examples of the various language techniques from their poems. 7. Poetry Profiles – these two pages are where the students will record essential information about each poem, thus building up a full set of their own notes as their study progresses. The first page prompts them to add information under the headings Poem, Poet, Context, Subject Matter, Themes and, most importantly, Links to Other Poems. The second page uses the headings Form/Structure, Sound Effects, Visual Imagery, Tone, Vital Quotes and Favourite Lines. The PDF includes one copy of these pages, so you will need to print one pair of pages for each poem on your selection. I’ll be adding lots more GCSE poetry resources to my shop so please check back regularly! I hope this is useful for you and instructive for your students - as always, I’d love to hear any feedback you may have.

GCSE Poetry: Comparing Charge of the Light Brigade and Poppies

This FREE ‘taster’ version of my full resource contains two main elements: Presentation: 10-slide Powerpoint presentation, showing an extract from the comparative poetry answer which is annotated to show your students how to use subject terminology, judicious quotes and comparative links. It is best used in conjunction with the accompanying worksheets but even without these, it should prove incredibly helpful for focusing students’ minds on exactly what is required to write a comparative poetry essay. If you are using the presentation alone, one possibility is that you could show students the slide featuring the extract from the planning grid and then ask them to ‘flesh’ out the planned paragraph. I’ve used this very well in timed conditions; I gave the class 15-20 minutes to write out a full paragraph, leaving the slide visible throughout. Another possibility is to reverse this: show them the written paragraph and ask them to jot down the ‘bones’ of the answer, i.e. create the plan. This helps them to understand the planning process and how it relates to the finished essay. The non-annotated written paragraph could also be displayed to the students, who must then list the aspects that correspond with Subject Terminology, Precise Quotes, Comparative Terms and Context. Students can be given different aspects to focus on, or can work either individually, in pairs or in groups to jot down the relevant information. The annotated written paragraph is an exemplar which is also helpful for giving students an insight into how the examiner will view their work, searching for and rewarding relevant material that satisfies the AOs. Worksheets: I’ve included three different worksheets for your convenience: Page One shows the plan and the finished paragraph Page Two and Three show the plan only, with space for your students to write out their version of the finished paragraph. Ideal for homework! Page Four shows the finished paragraph only, allowing students to annotate the Subject Terminology, Precise Quotes, Comparative Terms and Context Full version available here My full range of resources can be viewed at my Tes shop – or follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest for details of further freebies and special promotions!
