A writing frame for responding to any question on the 19th century novel section of the English Literature exam. Will work equally well with A Christmas Carol or Jekyll and Hyde - the two most popular texts. Effective at guiding students towards high quality responses. lso includes advice on how to create a thesis-style introduction on A Christmas Carol. ‘A thesis-style introduction that demonstrates your understanding of the question can be a really helpful way of starting your answer. It shows that you are ‘in charge’ of your essay and that you know what you think. It can provide a strong foundation for the rest of the essay. Keep referring back to the introduction to create a coherent response.’ AQA examiner’s report 2022 Creating a thesis-style introduction is a challenge for many students but is essential in helping students to reach levels 4-6 in the mark scheme. I have produced a simple 3 point structure to help students quickly generate a thesis statement in timed exam conditions. There is an example of the 3 point structure being used and then students attempt to imitate the structure for 4 other exam-style questions.

A PowerPoint containing carefully selected annotations on the poem, learning outcomes, questions and opportunities for making comparisons to other poems in the Power and Conflict section of the anthology. There is also a 4 page booklet containing a copy of the poem and two sets of comprehension questions.

2 lessons/PowerPoints. Lesson 1 has carefully selected annotations followed by 13 comprehension questions based on the annotations. There is also a starter activity involving an 8 minute clip from the film ‘The Not Dead’. Lesson 2 recaps the first lesson before looking at how to improve grade 3 paragraphs by adding zoom ins and deeper inferences. The final activity asks students to compare the poem to Prelude, War Photographer and Bayonet Charge. To help with this, students are provided with matching quotations and a suggested basic writing frame.

A gentle end of term activity for the Power and Conflict poems. There are 15 key quotations – one from each poem. Students can colour in the visual representation of each key quotation before going on to complete the differentiated extension activity which involves exploring the importance of the quotation within the context of the whole poem in conveying the writer’s message. PowerPoint for a walking talking mock exam on the Eduqas English Literature May 2017 Paper 1 exam. The text used for Section A is Romeo and Juliet. The named poem in Section B was Sonnet 43. This has been used successfully with a whole year group.

Following on from my lesson on revision 3 quotations from each poem, this lesson revises 3 key words from each poem. Remembering the key words should activate students to remember the whole quotation and the significance of it. There are also two extension acitivites: an A to Z code for comparing the poems a quiz on context in all 18 poems.

A lesson that invites students to explore comparisons between compatible poems in the EDUQAS anthology by looking for subtle and discriminating comparisons.
