Worksheets aimed at helping students consciously use a range of simple, compound and complex sentences to describe an image.
Task 1: Students combine the sentences already provided to describe the image.
Task 2: Students must come up with their own examples of simple, compound and complex sentences and then produce their description.
This task is very repeatable - just change the image each time. It is worth repeating until students find it easy to come up with simple, compound and complex sentence examples.
A random generator powerpoint that is useful for encouraging students to experiment with using alternative sentence openers.
Simply give students a topic to describe.
Turn on the random generator and students must begin each sentence with whatever word the random generator lands on. It may be ad adverb, present particple verb, preposition etcetera.
Students always seem to enjoy this activity.
20 Revision flash cards for 20 key quotations in Macbeth that encourage students to explore the impact of the quotations in a thorough and perceptive way.
The cards are colour coded to link to assessment objectives A01, A02 and A03 and the methods are underlined.
In each I try and ensure the analysis of the method leads directly on to a discussion of Shakespeare’s intentions and big ideas - informed by the Jacobean context.
I recommend giving students the blank version first to find out what they can already say about each quotation before sharing the cards so they can identify the gaps in their knowledge.

5 Quotation revision posters covering key quotations for 5 characters in Romeo and Juliet: Romeo, Juliet, Capulet, Tybalt, Mercutio.
Each quotation is accompanied with explanatory notes to help guide analysis.
A grade 9 response analysing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s relationship. This was an exam question in May 2021.
It is formatted to fit neatly onto one page for ease of photocopying.
This would achieve a mark in Band 6 because it is a critical,
exploratory, well-structured argument which takes a conceptualised approach
to the full task supported by a range of judicious references. There is some
a fine-grained and insightful analysis of language supported by judicious use of subject terminology. There is a convincing exploration of different perspectives and interpretations.
Also includes A3 quotation revision posters on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
A 42 page revision booklet for the Edexcel conflict poetry anthology. Contains a page on each poem packed with analysis of the key quotations. Also contains knowledge organisers on main ideas, structure and context and various high level model responses to a range of questions.
Selected annotations on Tissue and Ozymandias followed by a writing frame to compare the ways power presented in the two poems. Ideal for low ability students or for students writing comparative responses for the first time.
To push the more able, there are questions to encourage students to annotate Tissue independently.
Also includes a high level exemplar response.
Writing frame for comparing how London and Emigree present the power of a place. AQA power and conflict.
Also includes comprehension questions on London and Emigree to prepare for the comparison.
Also includes revision sheets on the two poems.
A Grade 9 (or close to grade 9 response because examiner marking is always highly subjective) to a range of typical exam-style questions. There are 8 responses in total. This will be be a useful resource for students preparing for mock exams in 2024 or as a tool for teachers to use to help plan follow up tasks and walk-through mocks.
Topics include:
Isolation
Happiness
Suffering
Poverty
Fears
Family
Also contains a 9th grade 9 response answering what I predict will be the topic for May 2024: places and settings.
All the responses are between 800 and 1250 words in length and were completed within 50 minutes to replicate actual exam conditions. All are consistently thoughtful and, for me, demonstrate sufficient examples of assuredness and conviction to reach level 6 in the mark scheme.
All have been adapted to fit snugly onto one page for ease of printing/downloading. You might decide to increase the font size to improve readability with some classes or print A3 rather than A4.
Also includes:
A timeline revision activity for A Christmas Carol that asks students to offer 3 layers of analysis for 13 key Scrooge quotations to help track his transformation in the novel from a solitary miser to a redeemed philanthropist.
A01: What is the meaning of the quotation?
A02: What is the impact of words/methods?
A03: What is Dickens’ message in this quotation?
Comprehensive answer sheet is included. I give this out at the end of the lesson so students can compare their answers to it.
Ideal revision activity in the run up to the May examinations.
