Lesson 1: A starter to recap previous course knowledge. A background to the lives of women in Weimar Germany and the new views of women in Nazi Germany, including the principles of Kinder, Kirche, Kuche. Some slides which give an insight into the Nazi views of women, with quotes from key Nazis, discussion of motherhood, girls and toy dolls etc. An activity to use a series of sources, which can be used as a carousal or in groups, which students use to extract the key information and fill in their worksheets to show attitudes and laws about work, marriage and appearance. A tick table with lots of statements about the success of Nazi policies towards women. Students judge the effectiveness of each statement, and overall. A plenary to discuss the major changes since Weimar Germany. Lesson 2: A starter with a source and a two inferences question. An opportunity to study a source from a woman at a Nazi rally, using the content, nature, origin, purpose method to analyse it. A video from YouTube to help recap the policies and lws towards women to allow the completion of stronger analysis. An exemplar is also provided for you to potentially work through with your students and critique. A final exam question asking ‘how far’ they agree with a given statement. Who Was to Blame for the Peterloo Massacre?

This lesson contains: A starter to look at 3 images of revolutions and some of the features. This sets up the image of Henry Hunt at Peterloo really well. A background into the problems in Manchester at the time and the plans for the meeting at St. Peter’s Field. A YouTube trailer for the Peterloo film and a short YouTube documentary to elicit answers from the class about what the people wanted and what threat there may have been. Also, what happened in the actual event. It’s a good opportunity to study the image of Henry Hunt and go back to the starter to imagine what the magistrates might have thought was  going to happen (i.e. a revolution). A long task to study a series of sources on the info sheets provided and to note down, for each, who each source blames and what evidence shows this. The students built up arguments for both sides. A run through of the aftermath and what happened as a consequence. Students can then judge who was to blame. An optional homework activity to design a memorial to those who died, or to publish a one-sided newspaper article about the event. The template for this is provided. A chance to write down some key words, such as persecution, genocide and pogrom. A video giving the background of changes in Nazi Germany with footage from the time. A main activity to sort 18 cards in chronological order, then write them onto the timeline of persecution over time. This is different from other timelines as you also have to write them onto the timeline higher or lower based on severity, with an extension to colour-code the different types of persecution (economic, political etc.). This lesson contains: A starter task to consider the England football team bade and the symbolism there. The Lions and the roses are a mix of medieval and Tudor history. Kids discuss what they know about the symbols. A couple of slides of background which explains and guides students through the causes of the War of the Roses, from Edward III’s death, Richard the II’s murder and the resulting line of kings to Henry VI. Within this, students consider who they think should be king after Edward, and the different variety of answers is evidence that no one really can decide who deserves it more…and they understand the origins of the war An activity to complete a short guided read about Henry VI and why he was unpopular, and this gives the students the short term causes of the War. A main task to sort 8 info cards about the key events into chronological order. The students then use these cards to do a timeline on the worksheet; they put Yorkist victories on one side and Lancastrian ones on the other, showing the turning tide of events down to Henry Tudor’s victory at Basworth Field. A plenary to consider what Henry, as the new king, needs to do to make sure he now ends the War and keeps hold of the Crown. The students can write this up based on what they have learned. This lesson contains: A ‘do it now’ starter based on previous learning on the course, but this can be edited to suit what you have taught. An introduction to the idea of resistance and how it manifests. Students can explore types of resistance that can be done other than force. They then get introduced to some images of resistance in the ghettos, then discuss a ‘word wall’ with different ways the Jews resisted. Students categorise them as giving hope, morale or those preserving values and beliefs. An overview of the difficulties faced when trying to escape from concentration camps. Students examine an excerpt and write down 3 reasons escape was hard. They then give specific examples from the next slide. A guided reading task on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising with questions around the outsides, differentiated to show where the information can be found. Lesson 1: A starter, which can be stuck in, to answer a quick quiz about previous course material. A recap of the need for a ‘big push’ to capitalise on the Great Depression and how the Nazis planned to do this. An overview of the different reasons Hitler gained massive popularity and power in this period, from those that the Nazis controlled (the SA, Hitler’s personality etc.), and those they couldn’t control (i.e. Depression, weak opposition etc.) An activity to study the information provided and complete the worksheet to show the facts about each reason. This will take a bit of time. An opportunity to rank the reasons in order of their importance and explain why. Lesson 2: A starter to recap from lesson 1. An activity to complete the ‘road to power’ worksheet using the on-board information about the political scheming which led to Hitler’s appointment as chancellor. Alternatively, you could print the slides and students could work in groups to share the information as info cards. A task to rank all reasons, including political scheming, in ‘significance circles’. An opportunity to complete an exam question to consolidate knowledge. This lesson contains: A starter to make students consider atonement and how we try to make up for things. This leads nicely on to today’s discussion of pilgrimages. A series of on-board slides that go through the reasons that people went on pilgrimages. Students use the 4 characters on the worksheet to summarise, in their own words, the reasons people gave for going on them. A video then follows from YouTube to help visualise what the pilgrims may have seen when they finally got their destination. An activity to consider whether religion was always in people’s minds. Students study a series of sources and give examples where religion was at the heart of it, and perhaps when other things were on pilgrim’s minds, like adventure or meeting a companion. An overview of the importance of Jerusalem and why people might go that far on a pilgrimage. The on-board info has images and maps to help visualise. Students then complete an independent guided reading with questions on the worksheet about a typical journey to Jerusalem. Students observe what some of the positives and dangers of such a trip might have been. A plenary to consider whether pilgrimages were holy or holidays, answering the enquiry question.
