Past tense verb endings practice - sport themed - worksheets/presentation

Worksheets presented on a ppt with 5 pages, each showing a different rule for the past tense. Children use the given sport themed verbs to make up their own sentences in the past tense, using the picture prompts to help them. Although designed to be used as worksheets it could be shown to the whole class to explain what to do and as an oral exercise. It can be photocopied as individual worksheets or printed and laminated for use with small groups or for working independently. It is all completely editable. The aim is to help children to get familiar with different past tense verb endings by making up their own sentences, therefore using them more in their own work. This is for children learning to write sentences and to sequence them. It meets these criteria: Combining words to make sentences; separation of words with spaces; intro to caps, full stops, qn marks, exclam marks; caps for names & I; sequencing sentences & time words. In the first lesson the children describe the water park orally, then match the adjectives to the different slides. They then use the adjectives to write full sentences. In the next lesson they describe what they did when they went to the water park, using time words. Titles and checklists are also included. Everything is fully editable. Two presentations (either PPT or Smartboard) to help children to sequence sentences to form a short narrative. The first one helps children to use adjectives. Children first choose a fish to describe to their partner. Can they guess which one it is? They then write a description of the fish, using given sentence openers. LA children have an outline help them. HA can go on to write about what the fish is doing today. The second presentation shows a fish going for a swim. The children have to guess what sea creature he sees first as the picture is partly obscured. Then what does he see next? They can also guess the time word used. They then write sentences to describe what he sees on his journey. Again, there is an outline to help LA writers and higher ability writers can continue the story. This includes a presentation - either PPT or Smart notebook, plans for 2 lessons and checklists for the children. It is for children who are beginning to put sentences together. A picture of animals they might find in the garden are displayed first. Children can spell them (robin, rabbit ant, bee etc.). Then they describe them using given sentence openers. In a second lesson, they imagine one of these animals went for a walk in the woods. What might they see? Different animals are revealed one by one and the children describe them. They use given time words to link the sentences together. Everything is fully editable. Feedback and suggestions welcomed. First lesson is on adverbs with lesson starter activity to sort words into classes - verbs, adverbs or prepositions. Children are reminded what adverbs are. They look at pictures of Mr Bean then act out some things he does. Others to supply an adverb to match the mime. They then write up sentences about Mr Bean using adverbs. The second lesson has a similar starter activity, sorting conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs. They then look at the sentences they wrote previously about Mr Bean using adverbs. How could they extend these to make them more interesting? Could use conjunctions to make them longer. Children to try some out. Could also use fronted adverbials at the beginning. Examples are given. The children then choose some of their sentences to improve in this way. All resources are fully editable. A ppt or Smartboard presentation to help children to sequence sentences. First they describe a spooky house with help from the pictures. Then what happens when they go to the spooky house? What do they see first? Who do the eyes belong to? New eyes appear. Who do they belong to? The children first tell the story orally, then they write down their own accounts. Lesson 1: Use of connectives concentrating on 'because'. Includes mnemonic which could be printed out for display. Show faces of 'Harry' with different emotions. Why is he feeling like this. Orally think of sentences - Harry was feeling happy because... Next children write sentences about children on their own table in a similar way. Lesson 2: This time children are shown pictures of places - London, the moon, the zoo etc. They write similar sentences about other children but this time use more connectives, e.g. Maria went to the zoo when it was her birthday. Loads of activities children can work through on their own using the word book. They check the spellings of animal names in the dictionary, learn to spell the days of the week and months of the year, learn body words and story characters etc. I found that they really enjoyed doing these e.g. when they had finished their work, and they were learning all the time! Children revise these letters by writing a story. They look at the pictures together on the PPT or Smart notebook and talk about them. What are the children doing? Why? Whose birthday is it? etc. What is this? A red van etc. Children then write their own stories using the given writing frame, choosing what is in the box delivered etc. They cut out pictures and stick them in the appropriate places and write in the missing words. Each of their stories will be different, or you can just do it on the whiteboard or individual boards as a revision lesson. Originally made for a small group children who needed more help. Plans for 4 lessons with resources. Using the presentation, (in either ppt or Smart notebook format) children establish what a non-chronological report is, it’s purpose and where they might find one. They then read an example of one as a class - about the planet Mars. After that, they plan and write their own report about a fictional planet e.g. Planet Zog. In further lessons, they read another report example - Pie Corbett’s about a Frost Unicorn, which you can download free from Teachwire. Again, they use their check-lists to find the main features. Next they draw a newly discovered alien from Planet Zog and plan a NC report about it on their ‘spidergram’ planning sheets. Finally, they write their own reports. All fully editable. Originally designed for Year 4 - Discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar. A spooky graveyard vocabulary mat in ppt which can be shown to the whole class or printed out to use individually. It is also provided in Smartboard format. This was initially designed to go with short film clip - 'Teachers TV: Writing a Ghost Story: Graveyard', which is a great clip for helping to create an eerie atmosphere and to teach children how to build up the tension in their stories. Ideas for lesson plans are included, with a link to the film clip, as well as a story planning sheet for the children. There is also a slightly easier vocabulary mat. All fully editable. The Storm - A story mat to aid creative writing

The story mat is designed to spark off ideas in children and to give them confidence to write independently. It should also help to extend their vocabularies. It is in PPT format so that it can be shown to the whole class at the beginning of the lesson as well as being printed out. This was originally designed to fit in with a topic on Greek Myths but then adapted to other storm descriptions – hence the 2 versions, which are the same but with different pictures. Fully editable. Tips: Talk about the pictures and their own storm experiences Test them on some of the vocab e.g. describe the ocean waves using a simile or find three words to describe the sound of the wind Can they find any other words to add to any of the lists? Discuss how a storm can build up from a cold dark sky to torrential rain with thunder & lightning. You can illustrate this by getting the class to make sound effects – gentle patter with fingers, building up to clapping, whistling, then howling wind, thunder clap. These 2 story mats are designed to improve children's vocabulary and to help them to write more independently. They are on PPT so you can display them for the whole class or print them off to be used individually. The first one is to help children to describe an alien planet. There are many different ideas for landscapes and features that they could encounter. The second is an aid to describing an alien. I would suggest that you get the children to draw their own alien first, thinking about how it moves, what is sounds like, smells like (!) and what it eats etc. Obviously they can use the mat to give them ideas. Then they will be ready to write this part of their story. The mats are fully editable so you can change them to suit your children. Two apostrophe practice sheets on PPT pages. The children use the pictures to generate their own sentences, using apostrophes. One page is singular apostrophes, the other plural. These can be shown to the whole class, but can also be printed out and laminated or photocopied. Lesson 1- Children describe Paddington Bear using expanded noun phrases. Lesson 2 - Children watch clip where PB meets the Brown family. They write sentences about this using connectives. Lesson 3 - Children watch the clip where PB eats in the station cafe. They write sentences using a question and an exclamation, as well as connectives. Lesson 4 - Children watch the clip of PB in the bathroom. Again, they write sentences using a question and an exclamation, as well as connectives. The PPT (or alternatively Notebook file) provides teaching and practice activities. There are links to the YouTube promotional clips for the first Paddington film. Learning objectives and checklists are also provided for each lesson. These enable children to proofread their own or a partner’s work. Small pictures are provided which can be printed out for children to use who need additional help. They can be stuck down one side of the page and children can write sentences next to them. Everything is fully editable so you can change it to suit the needs of your class.
