Atoms, Ions and Isotopes

(0)
Delivered to KS4 for the 'Atomic structure and Radiation' section of the AQA specification. Recaps the structure of the atom in detail including charges and relative mass. Allows the students to define isotopes and link them to mass numbers. Discusses the formation of ions and how they are formed for atoms to become stable (linking nicely to radiation later in the topic) Worksheets are attached for assessing learning at either point as preferred. Plenary is a visual based class task to determine student understanding of electron gain vs loss.

(Apologies for the poor preview, TES servers are having issues) Introduction to the three states of matter. Designed to be delivered to year 7 but easily changeable for different year groups or abilities. Activity requires water, a balloon and some blu-tac or similar. Gives the students a chance to explore the different states and get used to different properties. Crossword included to help with vocabulary. Introduces the particle model and its use. Animated slides guide the students through representing each state using the particle model and justifying why. Plenary is exam style questions.

Delivered to my year 11's. Can be altered to suit high or low ability. This lesson clearly outlines the structure of metallic bonding and allows the students to explore the link between electrons, bonding and properties (melting point, ductile etc). Resources included allow the students to justify the use of certain metals for different uses in day to day life as well as in industry. Exam style practice question for plenary.
Acid and Metals

Designed for year 7. Animated presentation to recap the students through creation of salts. Introduces concept of reacting acids with metals and assists them in naming the new salts formed. This lesson works well with a practical of the squeaky pop test. Leads to researching on the uses of salts (common salt, fertilisers and fireworks) Plenary is a high level past paper question. Animated guide to naming salts included scaffolding.
Rate Limiting Factors

This lesson was designed to be delivered to a year 10 class. Can be adapted for different abilities. Recaps the photosynthesis equation to introduce the ideas of the different reactants and factors needed. Real life scenario given to enable the students to understand rate limiting factors. Student lead discussion on different factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis. Graphs of light, carbon dioxide and temperature provided to help students develop their interpretation skills. Plenary is past paper exam question. Lower and higher ability questions included.

Acids and Alkali Chemistry

7 Resources
Designed to introduce Acids and Alkali reactions to KS3 students, namely year 7. Introduces acids and alkali with their properties. (Higher Tier identify ions responsible) Discusses different indicators and pH scale. Leads through (differentiated) practicals for making indicators. Links topics to explain neutralisation Guides for naming salts provided for support. Covers reacting acids with Metals. Guide presentation on creating risk assessments (really helped improve student understanding)
Radiation and Atomic Decay

This lesson was designed to be delivered to KS4 top set but can easily be tailored for lower sets. Initially goes into a description of radiation and introduces Geiger counters. Then goes on to discuss the 3 radiation types (alpha, beta and gamma). QR codes linking to pages for research projects, differentiated for difficulty. Examples of everyday uses for each radiation type. Plenary is exam style questions.
