This resource can be found at a lower price here: https://lessonplanned.co.uk/downloads/sherlock-holmes-newspaper-report-6-days-literacy-planning-year-56-resources-included/
This planning worked incredibly well for all classes in UKS2. Every lesson links to the 2014 NC and is fully resourced with slides and worksheets. Below is a description of each Literacy lesson.
Lesson 1: reading and answering differentiated reading comprehension questions about The Adventure of the Speckled Band from the book 'Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes' (a child friendly stepping stone book) which is available to purchase on Amazon in both Kindle form and paperback.
Lesson 2: using direct and reported speech in newspaper reports - this is personally one of the most enjoyable lessons I have taught lessons as they really enjoyed converting text messages between Holmes and Watson into direct and reported speech!
Lesson 3: how to write a newspaper introduction with examples and activities planned around Sherlock Holmes stories.
Lesson 4: learning about unbiased newspaper reports and writing without giving personal opinions.
Lesson 5: planning a newspaper report using a planning template.
Lesson 6: writing a newspaper report about the story they read in lesson 1. Example newspaper report and detailed success criteria provided.
A week of Literacy planning which is very well resourced for a mixed Year 3 and 4 class. This planning resulted in great diary entries written as Howard Carter.
Every lesson is resourced fully and has a set of matching PowerPoint presentations. This pack is ready to use straight away and works especially well with classes who are learning about Ancient Egypt in their topic lessons.
I have to be honest, this is my favourite lesson in my shop. I have taught it numerous times and it has always been fun for pupils and staff!
This lesson allows pupils to help the Captain get as much treasure as possible to the ship by designing a boat which will hold lots of gold (or marbles to you and I).
Once you’ve explained the task, pupils draw designs for a new, weight bearing boat and explain how they’re going to test the boat to show the Captain (the teacher) how good their design is.
After that, they build their model out of plasticine, test their boats in water and record the results.
The winning team always gets treasure in the form of golden chocolate coins!
Three days on instruction texts for upper KS2 to feed into the task of writing instructions for making a ‘cursing potion’ - an activity from week 2 of The Book of Bad Things planning which can be found in my shop.
Day 1: Going through an example instruction text
Day 2: Imperative verbs
Day 3: Paired write of an instruction text (making a ‘bad breath potion’ for their enemy)
This is the second lesson of two which enables children to design and make their own packaging for a product. My classes designed packaging for their chocolate products but it is very easy to adapt these lessons for a different product. Needless to say, my classes really enjoyed making the packaging and got to recap nets for 3D shapes at the same time!
I've included links in the planning which take you to the paper resources to save you having to find them.

It's Christmas week, you have ten last minute play rehearsals scheduled, a church visit and the class are so excited about Christmas that you're thinking your job is closer to that of a cat herder than a teacher right now.
Take a break from planning and take a look at these two lessons for Literacy in Christmas week (let's face it, you're not going to teach five Literacy lessons this week).
These lessons were used to reinforce the use of relative clauses by getting them to write a relative clause poem. The class produced many outstanding poems using this method and remarkably got really excited about our Christmas-based Literacy lessons with a hidden SPaG focus!
This is a word document information text about pirates (what piracy is, when did it start and some pirate laws). Could be used to identify the features of a report by circling features or just used as an introduction to a pirate topic.
A lesson about non-flowering plants from the 2014 Curriculum for upper KS2.
It includes a lesson plan, notebook and pictures for sorting.
