I like to share essential beginner French vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their French learning programme. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction.
The 5 fruits in this free sampler are:
lemon : oranges : pumpkin : raspberry : starfruit
The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two design formats to choose from - French flag or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum, so 10 flashcards / posters in total. I always print on card stock and / or laminate my flashcards / posters, as they display much more effectively, and remain in excellent condition for years.
The set of 25 French fruits flashcards / posters is here:

Die Farben auf deutsch 12 posters / flashcards These four adjectival agreement posters, with a focus on the colour grün, make an ideal grammar and speaking prompt in***German class*** - for example, I encourage students to look carefully at the similarities and differences between der grüne Regenschirm and die grüne Flasche in the singular, and die grünen Regenschirme and die grünen Flaschen in the plural.
I use questions such as Richtig der falsch? die grüne Regenschirme? , really emphasising, even exaggerating pronunciation, so that they can hear the difference in agreement. I often write the questions on the whiteboard too, as it’s equally important that they are able to recognize the differences in the written words too, and to link sound with spelling - all of this means I really make the most from my classroom learning display.

I encourage my beginner Italian students of all ages and stages to build up comprehensive vocabulary banks that they can reference easily whenever they need it, and they’re also really useful for regular vocabulary audits, which really helps students map their progress and keep track of their learning. Students take responsibility for organizing their own learning materials from the very beginning of their learning, keeping them carefully in vocabulary learning files or folders. My students all have reference resource binders or files - these can have a range of formats - for instance, sticking into a large exercise book, or punching holes down the left-hand side, and adding to files (we also use twine or thick string).
I also use this kind of Italian vocabulary list for quick vocabulary quizzes, spelling competitions and so on, and it also works well laminated for small-group work in class time. The font size is fairly large, as ensuring that language is clear and accessible is essential for beginner language learners, as they begin to familiarzse themselves with words and spelling systems in a new language.

I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of Spanish, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image.
The worksheet is useful for consolidating both fruits vocabulary and spelling, and students really enjoy testing their recall. This kind of worksheet is really versatile: I use for cover lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities.
There are two versions to choose from - colour, which makes the worksheet really visually appealing, or BW, which saves prep expense, and is also a popular activity with younger students, who like to colour as they read aloud, write and practise their i.

A lively whole-group communicative language learning game, perfect for practicing, reinforcing & refreshing how to count from 0 - 31 in English. The game has a***multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading***, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to create an English number chain as quickly as possible, starting with the first card zero, and ending with the final card, thirty-one. The game works just as well if the number sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface.
Laminate the cards if you can - they’re more learner-friendly, and they remain in excellent condition for years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I often play too - students really do enjoy it when I join in, and they seem to work that little bit harder on their concentration and pronunciation. Students walk around the room, talking to each other in their best English accent, sharing the information on their cards, until they have arranged the numbers in the correct order.

I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of English, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Students glue the lists into their English vocabulary books, or file them in their English vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful English vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
For young and / or beginner English learners, I focus initially on a single time set, and this list shows o’clock on a single page. This is because in my experience students benefit from a very clear outline of new language and vocabulary, avoiding lots of text on a single page - even my older students who are completely new to English prefer this. When I’m sure that students are confident with a particular time set, I then move on to additional time sets.
There are two backgrounds to choose from - England flag, which I generally use for English vocabulary display, or plain.

25 high-frequency Italian verbs, listed alphabetically***Italian-English*** and English-Italian, ideal as a year-round reference resource, and students find it particularly useful for exam revision, whether working in class time or at home. It’s useful for advanced beginner Italian students to provide a language learning map, and for intermediate Italian students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and as a vocabulary audit and enrichment.
The verbs are all in the infinitive form and include regular and irregular high-frequency Italian verbs. I’ve noted where a verb is conjugated with essere, which is a really handy quick guide to the particular features of the verb, and useful for later learning when we look at conjugation, such as the passato prossimo for example.
It’s important in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful Italian verb vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency Italian verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in their first or home language. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency Italian verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point.

This French-speaking countries word searches freebie comprises two differentiated word searches with answer keys, featuring a range of countries where French is an official language. I have a set of 10 differentiated word searches with country, capital city and flag reference list in my store too - the full set description is as follows:
Mots cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 40 countries / territories where French is an official language. The word searches help students***develop their knowledge and awareness of the Francophone world***, and just how widely it is spoken around the globe. I’ve used the definite article for the countries, so that students can see which countries are masculine, and which feminine, which in turn helps consolidate knowledge of gender in French.
In Grids 1-4, students search for a particular country. In Grids 5 & 6, they search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7 gives 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Similarly, in Grid 8, there are 16 countries given, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10 show a selection of national flags, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag. There is a single grid per page, A4 (8.5 x 11) portrait format. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Each grid has a corresponding answer key, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it.
I’ve included a complete reference sheet of all 40 countries, capital cities and flags - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general longer-term reference resource.

ADVANCED BEGINNER ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS FREEBIE 10 cards in question format
Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The questions feature a range of tenses and moods, such as the present tense, present subjunctive, perfect, imperfect, and conditional, with a couple of questions focusing on if + subjunctive + conditional clauses. There is a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, particularly the use of tenses. I try to include as broad a range of language as I can in the questions, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it.
Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.
Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas.

Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning long lists of verbs or other vocabulary all at once though: frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. I also use the books for quick vocabulary quizzes, again at frequent and regular intervals - I simply shout out the Spanish or English verb, the first student or team to shout out the correct answer wins a point. I’ve found this to be a really successful alternative to more formal vocabulary testing.
The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on high-frequency Spanish verbs for your students, the list is a good starting point.

KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN GCSE GERMAN SEPARABLE VERBS PRESENT TENSE 12 CHALLENGE CARDS FREEBIE focusing on conjugating German separable verbs in the present tense.
They are perfect for upper KS3 German students, who are working regularly with compound sentences and more complex texts, KS4 German students preparing for German GCSE, and KS5 German students, who are refreshing prior knowledge.
German separable verbs can be quite a challenging concept for English-speaking German learners, and I’ve found that focused practice really helps them consolidate their understanding of how to conjugate them accurately, particularly the location of the separable prefix at the end of the clause.
This kind of activity really does help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their conjugation skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The questions have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in German in general, and certainly in conjugating German separable verbs in the present tense in particular.
The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on conjugation, but also as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how conjugation works, and how patterns can be identified and applied, it’s also about enjoying working with German, and to feel confident about doing so. I like to have different set of task cards ready in folders for free-choice time, where students can choose a particular target focus that they feel they need to work a little more on, and certainly verb conjugation is a really popular choice.

Challenge 1: translate and write the verbs in English from a German prompt; the German verbs are in alphabetical order
Challenge 2: translate and write the verbs in German from an English prompt; the English verbs are in alphabetical order
Challenge 3: translate and write the verbs in English from a German prompt; the German verbs are in random, rather than alphabetical order. This is really useful for vocabulary recall, as students often learn new vocabulary in alphabetical order.

I like to give visual vocabulary lists to my young beginner learners of Spanish, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Spanish vocabulary books, or file them in their Spanish vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Spanish vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning.
We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a broader range of words and sounds, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits focus on the definite article, either singular or plural, which is a great for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Spanish, specifically gender of Spanish nouns.
The fruits are:
the apples
the bananas
the cherries
the fig
the grapes
the lemon
the mango
the nectarine
the olives
the orange
the papaya
the peach
the pear
the pineapple
the pumpkins
the raspberry
the rhubarb
the starfruit

French Numbers 0-31 Challenge Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so.
All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as maths symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French maths language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of maths is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning.
I’ve labelled the cards A-L, so that if you have the set of 48 task cards, you can use them together.

KS3 SPANISH KS4 SPANISH GCSE SPANISH KS5 SPANISH A LEVEL SPANISH I’ve created a lot of ‘quick conjugation workbooks’ for my students and they’re really popular and effective. They’re a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate all the various verb groups, tenses and moods in Spanish. I use them in a range of learning contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. Students really benefit from several opportunities to work through the workbook, once or twice a term across a whole school year is a great way of both mapping progress and developing overall understanding and competence.
My quick conjugation workbooks focus on a specific set of 25 essential Spanish verbs in a range of tenses. They include modals, regular, and irregular verbs.
This sampler demonstrates a range of Spanish conjugation challenges, with the answer key immediately following the relevant conjugation questions. It will definitely give you an idea of what the quick conjugation workbooks look like, and how they are structured, and whether you think they’ll work well for your students.
The contents are as follows:

Mots Cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features two differentiated word searches, focusing on 25 fruits in French, each grid with slightly different challenge. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new vocab - they may learn la pomme for example, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes une for example. I’ve selected high-frequency fruits, such as apple or***pear***, and also fruits which may be new to some learners, such as redcurrant or starfruit. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as the silent ll (groseille) and the use of the plural before a vowel, to show that the***letter s isn’t always silent***, for example les ananas or les olives.
There is 1 French to English grid, labelled with a lemon, where learners are prompted with the French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There is also an English to French grid, labelled with a raspberry, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the French equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in French, they also complete the French word list on each page. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid.
There is an answer grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginning learners of French. Use as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when you’re introducing fruits in French.

I like to have sets of super simple vocabulary recall worksheets that my students can work on independently for both practice and revision, either in class time or for home learning. They’re really useful for embedding vocabulary, checking recall, and for reading, writing and accurate spelling in German.
These four recall worksheets focus on 25 high-frequency German verbs, and feature four differentiated recall challenges:
Challenge 1: translate and write the verbs in English from a German prompt; the German verbs are in alphabetical order
Challenge 2: translate and write the verbs in German from an English prompt; the English verbs are in alphabetical order
Challenge 3: translate and write the verbs in English from a German prompt; the German verbs are in random, rather than alphabetical order. This is really useful for vocabulary recall, as students often learn new vocabulary in alphabetical order.
Challenge 4: translate and write the verbs in German from an English prompt; the English verbs are in random, rather than alphabetical order
It’s really useful for language learners to be familiar with a broad range of key verb vocabulary, and the worksheets provide a language learning map, enabling students to move on confidently to more complex language and texts, including authentic resources. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning. The worksheets also work well as a vocabulary audit and enrichment.
I give my students this German verbs list both as an answer key for independent checking, and as a reference resource - download it for free here:
