This lesson was used during a DES inspection. I received positive feedback. Students were working at Ordinary Level but were given sufficient challenges to push beyond that level. This is an original approach to a popular exam question. Students test their speaking, listening and writing skills in a number of ways.

Speech Writing - L1 - Identifying and employing techniques

This task is perfect way to introduce students to speech writing. Using two different adverts from large supermarkets, it would also work well for a media studies module. This lesson would work well as part of a functional writing task for junior or senior students. I tend to use it with 6th years as an introduction to the language of persuasion. After this, we look at samples from reading comprehension past exam papers. Students then complete a series of Part B activities. These lessons will feature as part of the bundle pack. Most importantly, more detailed lessons on the 100 mark essay will be included. As always, if you have a link to a speech, or know of a resource that works well with this lesson, then do not hesitate to share it with us by leaving a comment in the review section below.

Students will watch a speech. They must identify, define and explain the effectiveness of these techniques. This is preparation for Reading Comprehension Question on Paper 1. As students skills develop they will be able to use these techniques in their own writing. Consequently, this lesson has added benefits for Part B and the 100 mark essay. A bundle of lessons is available - so why not save yourself time and money? Head on over to my shop to see even more great teaching resources.

Allow 1-2 hours for this lesson. Students will watch 2 different videos. One from a famous writer, another from a past President. Students must consider the impact of personal elements within these speeches. Then, students will read a speech, aim to identify literary techniques, with a focus on personal elements. One of the slides also features a language focus to improve written analysis skills. Students should, by the end of the lesson, be able to evaluate the effectiveness of personal elements/anecdotes within speech writing. This lesson is completed differentiated. It's also ideal for use during inspections. If you enjoy this lesson, then why not download the others in this bundle?

Students have already looked at speech writing. They have identified the features of a speech using Emma Watson's speech at the UN as part of the HEFORSHE Campaign. This resource may be used to analyse a sample answer/a student answer. I have used it in small groups or in pairs. Students are given different coloured pens to annotate a text. It has worked well, as students are exposed to a variety of writing styles. This lesson is free. Why not check out additional resources which compliment this topic in My Shop.

This lesson has students look at a sample graduation speech. Then students work on a past exam question, plan it and write the introduction. Additional lessons are possible by having students write the complete piece. This is a good exercise for Leaving Certificate students preparing for Paper One writing tasks. Remember to download all the lessons available as part of this bundle to save time and money!
