A grade 9 model answer to the June 2022 AQA question from Romeo and Juliet. The question focused on the character of Romeo. The model answer analyses the extract then moves on to analyse two further moments in the play which present Romeo’s feelings for Juliet.

A model answer to the May 2024 AQA Power and Conflict Question. This response compares Kamikaze and Remains. Conceptual paragraph 1 explores how conflict dehumanises soldiers in both poems. Conceptual paragraph 2 explores how conflict leads to internal struggles for the soldiers. Conceptual paragraph 3 explores the debilitating nature of survivor’s guilt and shame. Quotations and poetic are analysed in thoughtful ways in each paragraph with a clear focus on authorial methods.

Two A* responses to the following question. Compare the significance of inequality in two texts (The Handmaid’s Tale and Feminine Gospels). I get students to compare both responses to compare the merits of both. I think version 2 is slightly better because it offers a wider coverage of quotations and also includes more critical debate for A05.

Part of a series of superhero-themed comprehension worksheets from a reading intervention I ran with Year 6 and Year 7, this text focuses on Captain Marvel’s origins from the Marvel franchise. Students read the 500 word text and answer the comprehension questions. The answers are included.

A detailed lesson, inspired by teaching tip 3 on the recent AQA 2022 examiner report, that guides students on how to write grade 9 topic sentences for a range of literature texts. There are multiple examples for A Christmas Carol, Macbeth, Lord of the Flies and Power and Conflict that all follow the same structure. At each stage of the lesson, students use the models to try and generate their own topic sentences for each studied text.

The ‘because, but, so’ method is an excellent tool for teaching students to think analytically about each poem in the Power and Conflict anthology. This tool is powerful because it encourages students to expand their thinking with precision and detail. After studying each poem, I ask students to write a ‘because, but, so’ paragraph on it.
