I created this word bank to support my students in their creative writing by providing them with some ambitious words to help describe different weather settings in a sophisticated way. I hope you also find this useful.

Students often use cliched onomatopoeic sounds in their creative writing, so I have created this list to help offer students more choice in their use of onomatopoeia.

If you want your students to write better exam responses which demonstrates more depth to their thinking, you should consider using the ‘because, but, so’ method from the writing revolution. This resource collates a wide range of exemplar ‘because, but, so’ paragraphs on the most popular GCSE English literature texts for AQA; Macbeth A Christmas Carol Romeo and Juliet An Inspector Calls Lord of the Flies. After studying the wide range of models, students should gain the ability to write their own ‘because, but, so’ paragraphs in the same style.

Many students struggle to get into the top band (level 4) for AQA Paper 1 Question 2. This resource is aimed at helping students move from level 3 to level 4. Students look at and compare level 3 and level 4 sample responses to 6 different Paper 1 Question 2 short extracts. For each, they must attempt to explain in their own words why the level 4 response is better than the level 3 response.

Part of a series of superhero-themed comprehension worksheets from a reading intervention I ran with Year 6 and Year 7, this text focuses on Hulk from the Marvel franchise. Students read the 500 word text and answer the comprehension questions. The answers are included.

To help students consolidate their knowledge of word classes, I ask students to try and compile an A to Z list of different word classes. Here is an example of suggested answers with A to Z for verbs, abstract nouns, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. I have had to be a little creative for the letters X and Z!

A 76 slide PowerPoint that systematically goes through 30 key quotations from the play chronologically. Students are given the quotation and a prompt question to discuss. The next slide offers analysis of the quotation. This process is repeated for all 30 quotations. The worksheet is used at the end to check how much information students have retained.

A worksheet to help guide students on how use show not tell to convey a character’s emotions. Students study the way ‘show not tell’ is used in the 5 sample paragraphs which cover 5 different emotions. I recommend putting these examples under a visualiser. I then ask students to produce their own paragraph in the same style selecting from a choice of 4 complex emotions.

Using appositive phrases in your English literature responses will improve the sophistication of your writing. If used correctly, they will impress your examiner. Here are some examples on how to use appositive phrases when writing about the 6 main characters in Lord of the Flies. Read the examples then have a go at creating your own sentences that use appositive phrases.
