If you want your students to write better exam responses which demonstrates more depth to their thinking, you should consider using the ‘because, but, so’ method from the writing revolution.
This resource collates a wide range of exemplar ‘because, but, so’ paragraphs on the most popular GCSE English literature texts for AQA;
Macbeth

Power and Conflict Revision Sheets

Each revision sheet contains high-level analysis of the key quotations from the poem. A02 and A03 are embedded into the explanations.
Also includes a ‘because, but, so’ summary of every poem.
The ‘because, but, so’ method is an excellent tool for teaching students to think analytically about each poem in the Power and Conflict anthology. This tool is powerful because it encourages students to expand their thinking with precision and detail.
After studying each poem, I ask students to write a ‘because, but, so’ paragraph on it.
Also includes a 90 question quiz with answers.
This document collates ‘because, but, so’ paragraphs on all 15 poems as examples to assist students with revising the key ideas in each poem.

Paper 2 Question 5 Grade 9 exemplar (June 2020)
A grade 9 response to the AQA June 2020 Paper 2 Question 5 about whether or not travel was a waste of time.
It starts with a powerful anecdote, has 2 paragraphs arguing the benefits of travel, then it looks at and dismisses the counter argument before reaching a conclusion which links back to the opening anecdote to gain marks for whole text structure and organisation. Vocabulary is sophisticated throughout and punctuation is advanced.
Power and Conflict Key Quotations in each poem
A revision activity that asks students to consider deeply the impact of the key 1 or 2 quotations in each poem. With so many poems to remember, I look to ensure all students have a high level of confidence with 1 or 2 key quotations from each poem that they can use to both zoom in to authorial methods for A02 then zoom out to explore authorial message for A03.
There are two versions to the activity - a) one quotation per poem or b) two quotations per poem. The version you use will depend on your group and how much they can complete in a typical session.
