Relative Atomic Mass and Mr

(0)
This lesson recaps chemical formula, Ar and Mr as well as using these in reacting masses (without the mole) and percentage composition. Suitable for GCSE, IGCSE and year 12 students.
Using a Colourimeter
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Using a Colourimeter

(0)
This lesson introduces using a colourimeter and the principle of Beer’s Law (includes link to Phet simulation). The main task is for students to create their own calibration curve for copper sulphate solution and use this to determine the concentration of a unknown solution of CuSO4.
Introduction to Acids & Bases
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Introduction to Acids & Bases

(0)
This lesson introduces acids and bases, starting with an activity to guide students through how ideas of acids and bases have changed over time (NOS for IB curriculum). The lesson links GCSE knowledge to defining them as Bronsted-Lowry acids and bases.
Reactivity 3.1.1 Acid Base Theory (Bronsted-Lowry)
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Reactivity 3.1.1 Acid Base Theory (Bronsted-Lowry)

(0)
Presentation aimed as a starting lesson for introducing acid-base theory for KS4 or KS5. The lesson defines acids, bases and alkalis and includes a student task to develop a timeline on changes in acid-base theory from selected literature.
Chemistry Internal Assessment Handbook
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Chemistry Internal Assessment Handbook

(0)
This 14 page guide provides students with a clear framework and instruction to structure their internal assessment (IA) for chemistry (first assessment 2025). It includes guidance on writing a descriptive RQ, how to format their report and how to process their data and report uncertainties.
HL Acid/Base Calculations
NJDavenportNJDavenport

HL Acid/Base Calculations

(0)
This presentation works through with examples and questions a series of problems linked to determining pH, Ka, pKa, Kb, and pOH for students at higher level (IB), but would be suitable for A Level students. Solutions and answers are in the notes section of the presentation.
Empirical Formula
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Empirical Formula

(0)
This presentation works through how to determine empirical formula from percentage composition or mass, determining molecular formula from empirical formula and Mr. It also includes student practical sheet to determine empirical formula of magnesium oxide with a focus on error and uncertainty in processing answers.
Titration Technique & Calculations
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Titration Technique & Calculations

(0)
This lesson focuses on why and how titration is used as well as a 5 step process students can follow to scaffold their calculations. Resource include presentation and worksheet with answers.
Empirical Formula Bundle
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Empirical Formula Bundle

(0)
All empirical formula resources which cover: How to calculate empirical formula from mass or percentage composition How to calculate empirical formula from experimental data and associated sources of error and calculating uncertainty Water of crystallisation - preparing and analysing magnesium sulphate (includes a 20 mark formative assessment with mark scheme).
Strong Acid/Base Calculations
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Strong Acid/Base Calculations

(0)
This resource was designed for teaching IB Standard Level acid/base calculations but is suitable for any courses that require students to calculate pH for strong acid/bases and use Kw. Answers to problems can be found in the notes.
Calculating Moles & Molar Gas Volume
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Calculating Moles & Molar Gas Volume

(0)
This lesson and includes teaching activities to guide students through the mole concept, including applying the molar volume of a gas and the Avogadro constant. Starting activity estimating grains of sand on a beach provides a great opportunity to discuss the magnitude of the Avogadro constant. A nice visual way to relate this in class is to have 1 mol of charcoal powder or NaCl measured out for students to see. Some IB MCQ questions and answers also provided on the final slides as examples.
The Mole - Calculating Concentration
NJDavenportNJDavenport

The Mole - Calculating Concentration

(0)
This lesson introduces students into how to apply the mole concept to solutions and solve a range of problems (answers included). The final slide leads onto the next planned lesson which is to create a stock solution of sodium hydroxide.
Back Titration of Aspirin lesson pack
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Back Titration of Aspirin lesson pack

(0)
This presentation and student practical sheet guide students through preparing a stock solution of hydrolysed aspirin which is then titrated against HCl to enable moles of aspirin to be determined.
Empirical Formula - Water of Crystallisation
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Empirical Formula - Water of Crystallisation

(0)
This lesson pack would be suitable over a 2-3 series and guides students through the preparation of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) and analysis to determine its water of crystallisation. This pack includes presentation, student practical sheet plus practical assessment paper with mark scheme included.
Preparing a Stock Solution
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Preparing a Stock Solution

(0)
This presentation and student practical sheet guide students through the technique of preparing a stock solution of NaOH for titration against a primary standard (KHP).
Activation Energy of UV Beads
NJDavenportNJDavenport

Activation Energy of UV Beads

(0)
This presentation and student practical sheet introduces the Arrhenius Equation and how it can be modified to determine activation energy (Ea) for a simple experiment using UV beads. The advantage of this task is it is far more straightforward for students to complete compared to more complex class practicals such as the reaction between bromate and bromide ions or the iodine clock reaction. There is also much less prep and tidying! This activity includes a spreadsheet of sample data and calculation which can be shared with students.
