Born female, James Barry is one of the first documented transgender scientist who rose the ranks of the British Army to Inspector General of Hospitals in Canada. He fought for improved sanitation and healthcare for most vulnerable and rejected members of society at the time; mentally ill, prisoners, enslaved people, soldiers’ families and lepers. Among many of his achievements was the world’s first documented caesarean section where the mother and baby both survived. His secret was never discovered until he had died and when it was the army covered up his documentation for the next 100 years.
A great Scientist to study to showcase how an individual can overcome adversity. Could be taught alongside the start of the Victorian Era.

Get the children decorating your class with these Christmas paper chains. They will be amazed at how long they can make one as whole class one it if they all work together. Alternatively they can make their own individual ones as a Christmas treat. A great opportunity to teach repeated patterns.
