There are 4 articles and each one has a different newspaper name, date and focus. Each report uses the features of a newspaper article (as expected for KS2 children in the UK).

This resource has been inspired by Alfred Noyes’ poem, The Highwayman. It provides 6 diary entries which provide different viewpoints from 3 of the main characters in the poem. There are mistakes in each of the diary entries so pupils need to work out the errors and then correct them as part of an editing task. Additionally, 2 self and peer checklists are provided to support children with what they need to find and edit. Answers are provided to help inform pupils why the mistakes need correcting too.

Design your own fairground theme park! This area and perimeter task will provide your children with an engaging activity where they will want to work out the area of each ride so they can place it in their own theme park. The task sheet provides children with different styles of area questions, some need to be measured, others with given sides and then the option of irregular sizes which will require children to create compound shapes. The children can choose where to place their rides and how the spacing of their rides is important and why area skills fit into the context of real world problems. As an additional task, they can solve the perimeter of each of their rides. I’ve completed this task multiple times with classes and every time they’ve been desperate to continue the task after the lesson.

This game is called Back to the Fractions and is designed for children in Year 4, 5 or 6 who are learning how improper fractions can be turned into a mixed number (a.k.a. mixed fractions). The aim of the game is to completely fill your template card of fraction amounts until the improper fraction given has been made. You do this by rolling a die, moving said amount, and each time they land on a colour rectangle, they can colour that related fraction segment on their template card. This newspaper example aims to show how Year 5 and 6 writing objectives can be put into a newspaper report. Using Kensuke’s Kingdom as the newspaper report focus. The point where Michael and Stella (the dog) fall off the boat during a storm and the newspaper is written as a way of reporting the boy’s disappearance. There are two versions of the same article. One is written as a whole page of a newspaper report. The second is partly written with the idea being that you could give the less partial version as a way of getting pupils to edit and improve it. Setting Description with Scaffolding for Upper KS2 (Year 5 &6) This activity is for children in Year 5 and 6, who are looking to write about a setting. It contains 3 different colour images about different types of settings. Each setting contains a scaffolded structure to aid children to reach the same level of description. Additionally, there is a peer and self review slip which states objectives you may expect to see related to setting descriptions (figurative language techniques). Each one of the skills has an example next to them so children can see good examples of each skill. The slip also allows for other students to leave feedback on the review slip (this is another Yr5 expected skill - to leave feedback for others).
