The lesson incorporates a range of activities. To start there is a short video clip from the day after the earthquake. Next are slides including maps and plate margin diagrams which can be explained to pupils prior to them completing a gap fill exercise, which explains how the earthquake occurred. After that are a selection of photos of the damage, which can be used for Q and A with the pupils, including a 2 minute video clip of people being rescued from the rubble. I have then included a link to the BBC panorama programme which includes information about the earthquake and explanation of why so many people died. A note taking sheet is included. Next is a fact classification activity, with information about both Syria and Turkey. Finally there is a homework task. All resources are included at the end of the lesson.
This lesson allows pupils to develop their understanding of headland and bays formation. It incorporates photos, geology maps and writing frames. There is a mark scheme for students to peer / self assess their answers. the plenary is a Swanage OS map quiz with answers.
This lesson enables students to develop an understanding of how island arcs form from ocean trenches. It incorporates a wide range of photos and diagrams. It also includes note taking sheets with key terminology that the pupils need to include when explaining.
This lesson starts by giving the students to take lecture notes on El Niño and La Niña. Next they are introduced to the normal weather conditions in the Pacific before being given diagrams of the normal conditions and El Niño so they can spot the difference. Students are then introduced tot he characteristics of El Niño. After that they are introduced to the characteristics of La Niña. In order to develop their understanding the students are then required to produced their own annotated diagrams of El Niño and La Niña on a base map they are given. To further secure their understanding they undertake a discussion activity in pairs. To test their understanding students complete a summary table (answers provided). Next there is an examination questions for students to test their understanding (answer provided). Finally there is a whiteboard quiz. All resources are included at the end of the PowerPoint.
This lesson uses maps and photos to teach students about the Haiti earthquake. There is a causes gap fill activity and an effects and responses classification activity. The lesson also includes questions from the sample assessment materials. There is also an opportunity for students to consider how the Haitians can modify loss and modify vulnerability to earthquakes.
This lesson is designed to summarise the climate change agreements from COP26.
The first part of the lesson outlines what COP26 is and the history to this meeting including details about the Rio Earth Summit, Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement. Cartoons are included to promote discussion about different world leader’s opinions and actions.
Next COP26 is introduced, with details about venues, participants and NDC agreements.
After that are videos from David Attenborough and the Queen, urging world leaders to come to agreements that will reduce the impacts of climate change.
Finally, there are details about the major agreements from COP26 including reducing methane, deforestation and banning the use of coal.
There is a worksheet for pupils to complete throughout the lesson to maintain focus of the content.
The last task is a team work activity which can be completed in pairs and small groups. It asks the pupils to imagine they are the Prime Minister and to suggest ways to limit climate change to 2 degrees Celsius. There are a variety of sub headings to help to scaffold the discussion. All resources are included at the end of the PowerPoint.
The lesson includes information on all elements of prediction, prevention and responses. The main focus is on Haiti and Sendai earthquakes but there is additional information about other earthquake areas. There is a note taking sheet and information sheets, which the pupils can use to take notes.
The next activity is a recall activity. Pupils are asked to recall what Haiti and Sendai do to modify losses and vulnerability.
Finally there is an essay question and plan which the students can edit and improve on in order to plan their answers.
This resource is designed to last for 12 lessons and be independently completed during lock down. It includes the following topics: development indicators and index, employment structure, trade, fair trade, aid, Charity:water case study. It is a single PowerPoint with instructions for the students to follow on each slide. The idea is that over the 12 lessons the PowerPoint will build up into a project that can then be submitted for teacher assessment. The lessons have differentiated tasks to stretch the more able. Each lesson/topic area can be graded using the mark scheme and AtL (attitude to learning) score, which can then be recorded in the student’s diary (these are all located on slides in the PowerPoint). Many of the resources are included at the end of the slide show, although a number of hyperlinks to websites and videos are also included. I designed this lesson for Year 9 but it could be used across KS3.
I have also included a version for students who do not have access to the internet.

This lesson starts by testing the student’s knowledge of the location of major cities in the UK. It then introduces the concept of core and periphery. Pupils then have to apply this to explain the patterns on two UK maps. Next, the students research 4 causes of uneven development (infrastructure, economic change, government policy and geographical location), using information sheets incorporated into the PowerPoint. The lesson also incorporates an examination question and mark scheme. The plenary is an opinion line about the impact of government policy on addressing uneven development through the creation of a Northern Powerhouse.
This lesson is a thinking skills DME activity. It involves pupils identifying the characteristics of an ageing population and the speed at which the population is changing in the UK. They then have to implement a plan to tackle the problems in a local area. It is designed to get the students to learn more and think more deeply about the solutions available and to categorise and prioritise these solutions. at the start these is a quiz on population pyramids. All resources are included in the PowerPoint.
This lesson uses diagrams and photos to allow students to develop their knowledge of spit formation. There is a writing frame and word bank to support students in explaining how spits are formed and a mark scheme for teach / peer / self-assessment. There is an OS map of Blakeney Point Spit for students to use to incorporate map skills in their answer. The lesson also uses photos, GIS and maps (at a range of scales) to explain bar and tombolo formation.
There are enough resources here to lat 2 lesson, alternatively you can pick and choose the activities that you find most useful. In this lesson students will be introduced to the demographic transition model. They will be shown a video clip that outlines the characteristics of each stage and the reasons for birth rates and death rates. Pupils will then undertake a living graph activity with temporal statements relating to the UK. Students will write paragraphs explaining where they located the statements. There are sentence starters to help students to structure their answers and a mark scheme which can be adapted. There is also a spatial living graph set of statements, which relate to different countries around the world now. A DTM quiz is also included and an examination question.
This lesson will start by asking the students to recall the stores and flows in the carbon cycle. They will then be shown diagrams of the carbon cycle for the rainforest, tundra/taiga and deciduous forests. They will compare these and suggest reasons for the differences, before drawing their own carbon cycle to scale. They will be given information on carbon exchanges in the rainforest before identifying the impact of an individual tree on the carbon cycle, which will require them to apply the knowledge they have gained form the lesson. This lesson forms part of a series of lessons and is available as a bundle.
This includes two lessons. In the first lesson students will research into strategies implemented to reduce the impact of the oil and gas industry on the water and carbon cycles. The second will involve students giving presentations, with PowerPoint presentations and information sheets. The students are split into six groups, each with a strategy such as insulated ice and gravel pads. They split up the three tasks (presentation, speech and information sheet) within their group and are given information about what to research and how they will be marked. All resources for students to use for note taking are included at the end of the PowerPoint.
This rainforest bundle includes lessons on climate, water cycle, nutrient cycle, exploitation, management, food webs, location, structure, plant adaptations and rainforest tribes.
The pupils firstly plot the daily weather regime of the rainforest onto a time line, by listening to a diary entry. After that they are introduced to the water cycle in the rainforest and the convectional rainfall that occurs. Diagrams and a word bank are included. Next, there are a variety of nutrient cycle diagrams provided, which students can use to create their own nutrient cycle diagram. Finally there is a plenary quiz. All resources are included within the PowerPoint.
This lesson includes details of the Mercalli and Richter scale, with activities including ranking, living graph, map analysis, seismic trace analysis and table analysis. the lesson updates both scales, with current scales being widely used nationally and globally including the Moment magnitude scale, the JMA seismic intensity scale and PAGER. The lesson also incorporates faulting and examination questions.
