This bundle includes all you need to teach the full AQA Step Up to English course. This is a 3 week unit which is designed to prepare students for their AQA spoken presentation on a topic agreed with their teacher. The unit guides students through the process by looking at aspects of effective presentations such as openings, rhetorical devices, memorable endings, use of cue cards to structure a talk, delivering the talk and responding to questions. Lessons include exploring good examples of famous speeches and student talks as well as group discussions and opportunities to try out a variety of strategies. A 37 slide PPT is included as well as all six resources in both word and pdf formats and a set of teacher’s notes. I hope you enjoy teaching this unit.
This highly engaging and enjoyable unit of work is designed to help students write creatively with a particular focus on narrative and descriptive writing. It supports students in actively exploring and enjoying both descriptive and narrative texts, looking at excellent and varied models from a range of literature and identifying successful features before moving to composing their own creative responses. It is aimed at a first year Junior Cycle class and may also be a suitable unit for a second year class depending on ability. A well presented 83 slide teaching PPT is included as well as a detailed set of teacher’s notes with suggested approaches and all thirteen classroom resources.
Learning outcomes (from Junior Cycle Specification) addressed in this unit include:
Writing
Demonstrate their understanding that there is a clear purpose for all writing activities and be able to plan, draft, re-draft, and edit their own writing as appropriate.
Write for a variety of purposes, for example to imagine, explore, engage, amuse, narrate.
Engage with and learn from models of oral and written language use to enrich their own written work

This half-termly unit of work is designed to help prepare students for SQA National 5 English with particular focus on the Component 3 creative writing task. The unit will help explore and develop key writing skills such as narrative voice, openings and endings, writing dialogue and effective description. Students will explore good models of texts and identify successful features before moving to planning and composing their own piece of creative prose fiction for their portfolio. I have included a 52 slide teaching PPT plus all eleven resources in both word and pdf formats. This unit is accompanied by a detailed set of teacher’s notes. English Teaching Poetry Unit: Ted Hughes 'The Jaguar’
This highly engaging unit is designed to introduce and explore Ted Hughes’ poem ‘The Jaguar’ as well as develop students’ ability to write analytically using a specific, taught paragraph structure. This unit is collaborative in nature with lots of opportunities for paired, group and class discussion. It includes a very nicely presented 41 slide teaching PPT as well as all 15 student resources and a set of detailed teacher’s notes explaining how to deliver the unit. Outcomes include an analytical PETAL paragraph which can be extended into a longer essay using the structure provided and a comparative essay as an extension activity. Please note that all resources are in both Word and pdf formats with the teaching Powerpoint in PPT and pdf formats.

This updated unit of work is designed to prepare students for the AQA Step Up to English Component 1 Literacy topics Music unit. It supports students to engage with relevant text types, develop some of the key skills and practice the style of assessment questions before they tackle the actual AQA assessment papers. Creative Writing Unit
This highly engaging and enjoyable unit of work is designed to help Step Up to English students prepare for the AQA Component 2 writing section with a particular focus on narrative writing. It supports students in actively exploring and enjoying narrative extracts, looking at models from a range of literature and identifying successful features before moving to composing their own creative responses in the style of the writing assessment.
Grammar and Punctuation Starters
This resource was designed as a series of starters for my Step Up to English group. It focuses on sentences structure and punctuation and provides opportunities for students to apply new skills. It takes a visual approach to teaching simple, compound and complex sentences and provides texts and writing activities which help provide a context rather than the more traditional method of writing out individual sentences. As well as sentence structure, it covers punctuation including use of commas and punctuating direct speech.
I have also added a set of Step Up creative writing tasks and a CPD unit on how to teach creative writing for Entry Level English.

This practice unit of work will familiarize students with the style of assessment questions on the AQA assessment papers. It is designed to prepare pupils for the style of questions on the Gold award but I have also included reference to the Silver award tasks if, like me, you have students who are doing both within the same class. It should last around 4-5 weeks depending on the number of English lessons you have. I have not broken it down into individual lessons as all classes are different and some will need longer on some activities than others. It is designed in a way that classes can build confidence in tackling the Step Up style of questions.

AQA English Language GCSE Paper 1: Narrative and Descriptive Writing Tasks
This resource includes fifty creative writing tasks (narrative and descriptive) based on original images and which are presented in the AQA Paper 1 format. It includes 25 original images which can act as inspiration for creative writing or as practice assessments. The photographs belong to the author and I am happy for teachers to use them in the classroom. I have also included planning frames for both narrative and descriptive writing tasks. This updated half-termly unit is designed to prepare students for their AQA Step Up to English Component 2 Creative Reading and Writing GOTHIC HORROR assessment. This unit of work is designed to help build the skills necessary for success in the speaking and listening assessment for AQA Functional Skills English as well as those valued by employers. It is a discussion based unit and explores skills such as asking questions, leading a discussion, researching and planning a presentation. It leads to two assessment activities, a ‘meeting’ in which students discuss setting up a series of lunchtime clubs for younger pupils followed by an individual presentation in which students showcase their own plans for a school club. English Skills: Vivid Verbs, Amazing Adjectives and Adventurous Adverbs
This is a highly engaging and enjoyable series of lessons which helps to develop key skills including vivid verbs, amazing adjectives and adventurous adverbs in an interactive way. It can be taught as a weekly or fortnightly skills lesson to a Year 6 or Year 7 group and culminates in a piece of descriptive writing. I have used it this term with my lower ability Year 7 group and had some lovely writing from them. A teaching PPT and accompanying resources are included.
