CIRCLES - Vocabulary

(1)
This colourful powerpoint uses diagrams, animations and photographs to introduce more vocabulary needed for working with circles e.g. chord, arc, sector and segment whilst revising the words introduced in ‘Circles- Introduction’ ( radius, diameter, circumference, centre, circular, semicircle ). It is aimed at GCSE students and below, both at foundation and higher level. The later slides show the connections between circles and 3D shapes and extend vocabulary to sphere, hemisphere, cylinder, ellipse, cone and concentric circles. The slides have notes and suggestions accompanying them. The worksheets further reinforce the names of different parts of circles and one is designed to make students draw and measure their own diagrams and introduces ideas they will meet later when studying circle theorems. The video shows how to draw a hexagon by constructing it inside a circle using arcs. Some students find drawing circles very difficult and anything that motivates them to practise is useful. DfE references for GCSE 9-1 G9, G1, G4, G12 G9 'Identify and apply circle definitions and properties, including : centre, radius, chord, diameter, circumference, tangent, arc, sector and segment. See my other resource ‘Circles - Introduction’ which starts from the beginning with radius and diameter calculations, symmetry etc. For more resources like this please visit the Skillsheets shop.

Equivalent forms, cancelling, addition and subtraction are also included. The emphasis in the decimals section is on understanding place value. Tenths, hundredths and thousandths are introduced and related to fractions. There is also the opportunity to practise rounding off decimals, an important skill eeded when solving calculator problems. See percentages as fractions out of 100. Find one number as a percentage of another. Calculate a percentage of an amount by finding 1%. Calculator methods mainly. Equivalent forms of percentages, decimals and fractions. Each worksheet comes in three versions. The Equation of a Circle x² + y² = r²

(1)
These ten worksheets guide students through the origin of the x² + y² = r² equation of a circle and use a variety of problems to reinforce their understanding of the equation and its uses. Tangents are also introduced as are the methods for finding points of intersection between lines and circles. There are plenty of reminders for solving simple quadratic equations like x² = 16 and also simultaneous equations where one equation is not linear. Written for the GCSE 9-1 specs but the material is also useful for A-level C2 students. Some of the sheets are similar so one can be done in class and the other used for reinforcement. There are problem sheets to extend the most students. As ever, the aim with SKILLSHEETS is to encourage learners to think about what they are doing and use diagrams to help them understand the topic. This colourful powerpoint uses animations and photographs to introduce or revise the vocabulary needed for working with circles e.g. radius, diameter, circumference, centre, circular, semicircle. There is also an accompanying worksheet. Slides require students to draw circles with given dimensions and perform calculations based on circles fitting inside other shapes and vice versa. The images and animations can also be used to revise area calculations, metric unit conversions, symmetry ( using photographs of car badges for instance ) and locus work. The hardest problem requires a knowledge of Pythagoras to solve it. The slides have notes and suggestions accompanying them. See my other resource ‘Circles - vocabulary’ which follows on from this one to introduce chords, sectors, segments, arcs and tangents. This collection of five worksheets ( complete with answers and working out ) covers the basics of multiplying out triple brackets then moves on to using the results in different situations. Students are eased into the topic with a little revision of the multiplying out that they will already have mastered then there is plenty of practise with progressively harder examples of multiplying out triple brackets including those with repeated factors. The extension sheets include proofs and finding the difference between two expressions ( a challenge in itself to remember to do x³ +3 x² + 3x + 1 )- ( x³ - 3x² + x - 1 ) carefully ! ). Geometric problems involving cube diagrams to illustrate the expansion of ( a + b )³ will provide useful extension work for the brightest GCSE students. Evaluate 1.1³ to show how powers of numbers can be found using expansions. The sheets could be used independently by your brightest y9s and above as they include instructions.
