This is a year 3/4 whole-class reading lesson using Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes: Little Red Riding Hood. The children discuss their existing knowledge of Little Red Riding Hood, read the new version, discuss, and then summarise the story. HAPS will be pushed to discuss the differences between different tales. My reading lessons focus on the explicit reaching of 1-2 reading skills from the VIPERS skill set, to allow children to build on their understanding of different reading strands. All texts belong/created by Roald Dahl, no copyright infringement intended

Lessons focus on one to two skills maximum per lesson. I paired these lessons with some writing-based lessons and the children loved this book. You would need a copy of the book of photocopies of some pages. These reading lessons focus specifically on these pages: prologue, 17-26, 48-56, 56-63, 92-97, 188-193, 206-216. The lessons are all retrieval-based but one lesson also looks at inference.

Year 4/3 - Whole Class Reading Unit - The Boy Who Grew Dragons

These lessons have been planned so that children engage with The Boy Who Grew Dragons while learning about summary/retrieval/vocabulary skills. There is ALSO a lesson using the picture book ‘Tell Me a Dragon’ to kickstart your dragon unit. The lessons focus specifically on the prologue, chapter 1, chapter 4, chapter 8, chapter 15, chapter 19, chapter 21, and chapter 27, you will need to read the rest of the book outside of these lessons. Everything you need to teach these lessons is included and good to go apart from an audiobook/copy of reading material (for copyright purposes).
