Silas Marner by George Eliot: Chapter 6

If you only buy one lesson in this series, this would be a useful one to begin to tie together the use of structure, narrative, themes and characters. This lesson is differentiated (Group 3 is definitely harder than any of the other group tasks) and facilitates students' engagement with the real purpose of this chapter through paired and group question led activities.

Poetry Comparison: 'Neutral Tones' V 'My Last Duchess'

This lesson teaches students the STILT(s) acronym for poetry comparison, this could be used to teach comparison skills as well as teaching specific comparison points on these two poems from the Edexcel Relationship Collection. The lesson is challenging and aims to take students grades to the top levels. It includes engaging 'thunks', activities, guidance, exemplar paragraphs and guided questions and processes that could be applied to other pairs of poems. More comparison lessons to follow shortly, so if you like this follow me here or on Twitter @jomarsh1.

An outstanding observation lesson based on David Didau's Slow Writing Technique. I have used this lesson several times and every time get excellent evidence of progress across a full range of age groups....

This lesson draws on a wide variety of teaching strategies to engage and focus students with how to analyse poetry. These skills in turn can be used for analysing Unseen Poetry. This lesson is fully differentiated, from learning objectives, to tasks and to outcome plenary. This lesson should take between 2-3 hours to teach and includes a task that crosses over into Imaginative Writing for the Language Paper. I have taught this lesson a number of times and my students always enjoy the ‘finding the answer’ style of this lesson a lot of fun! If you like this, then you’ll love my other Conflict Poetry resources in my Shop.

Christmas End of Term Assembly

Christmas End of Term Assembly

(1)
This assembly uses humour to appeal to secondary age students and reiterate that Christmas does not have to mean not looking at your study books for 2-3 weeks. This assembly is one that stays in students’ memories and resonates with them for a long time afterwards. The resource comes with a complete script and the powerpoint is fully animated to ensure that the visuals match the presentation. This is an assembly that my students loved and laughed about for a long time after first presenting this. WARNING: DO NOT SHOW THIS TO ANY YEAR GROUP WHO MIGHT STILL BELIEVE IN SANTA! :-)

2020: Motivational Assembly - Who do YOU think you are?

This assembly is ideal for use as a return to school assembly: it draws on the musings of Jay Shetty, an international speaker who is entirely relateable to young people today. This assembly motivates students to think about who they are and what they want to achieve and to understand that being different is fine, you take you own route through to success. The link in this resource takes you to the video for this assembly and also a range of other useful video resources for future assemblies. My own students were transfixed by this assembly and then went on to refer back to it throughout the academic year, which is why I wanted to share it. This is a perfect assembly for returning year 10s through to year 13s but is equally accessible for younger students who need a sense of direction. This assembly uses a range of strategies to engage students, include visual images, thought provoking questions and a challenge to take away with them. If you like this resource then you will love my other assemblies (both rated 5 *s): https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-year-2020-assembly-welcome-back-and-making-changes-11783964 https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/christmas-end-of-term-assembly-11599300
Introduction to the Detective Fiction Genre

Introduction to the Detective Fiction Genre

(2)
This lesson introduces KS3 students to the conventions of the Detective Genre using short film clips and a fun game. This works really well as either the first lesson of a topic on this genre or as a transition day activity as the students will enjoy the lesson and be left feeling that studying English is not always reading and writing.

A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare: Act 4

(2)
This lesson uses engaging activities to challenge students to think about the language, structure and form of this Act. This powerpoint includes a wide range of activities and would take 6-8 hours of teaching time to teach in its entirety. Available as a single Act or as part of a complete Unit of Work at a discounted price.

A complete unit of work on Creative Writing KS3/KS4

This resource includes tasks on building and using different sentence structures, how to use more ambitious punctuation, vocabulary choices, writing devices: figurative language, opening sentences, show don't tell and the wwwww method of writing construction plus some highly engaging tasks based on the mysterious images left by Harris Burdick. My students loved this unit of work and have continued to produce high quality pieces of writing. My other resource on David Didau's slow writing would work really well as a follow up to this unit.
