This 22 page unit of work has students investigating some of Englands most visited tourist locations including the Angel Of The North, Cheddar Gorge, Sherwood Forest, Stonehenge, Handrien's Wall and the many chalk figures found on hill sides. They then have the opportunity to design their own weeks holiday itinerary for a visiting family in which they can include these locations or others they may discover along the way. This is a fun end of term project or assessment project which can be adjusted to most abilities.

About a tenth of the Earth’s population live in mountainous areas. These worksheets look at the lives of the Chagga People, Sherpa People, and Quechua Tribe. The Chagga People live on Mount Kilimanjaro however, since the area was given National Park status in 1970, they have seen an increase in tourists which has resulted in their displacement to the dry, dusty plains below. The children are taught to love and respect the mountain through their geography lessons; although many families are unable to afford school necessities, and some don’t attend at all. Your students are tasked to choose how to spend £15,000 of aid to help double school attendance and petition the Minister Of Education. The Sherpa People live in Nepal and have become heavily influenced by explorers hoping to conquer Mount Everest. Your students will discover the history and life of the Sherpa People and develop their views on whether they believe these influences have been positive or negative. The environmental impacts are discussed with the support of a newspaper article which explores how the Sherpa People have cleared over 6500lbs of debris left behind by explorers. The Quechua Tribe live in the Andes Mountains where they farm vegetables and keep cattle. Your students look specifically at how the llama has adapted to life in mountainous areas and how this may evolve as the Earth’s climate changes. They also look at how the Quechua have evolved slightly larger hearts and lungs compared to themselves and how this helps them live in the high mountainous environments. This booklet introduces students to the global links within sports, specifically tennis. Wimbledon is studied in reference to where food and drink are sourced and how its 2013 ‘Master Plan’, launched in 2013, aims to make the competition more sustainable, from reducing landfill waste, advertising recyclable bottles, serving vegan options and reducing the tennis balls air miles! How tennis balls are made, and by whom, is looked at in addition to Wimbledon working with Water Aid and tennis as an economic activity. The unit concludes with the students designing a logo and brand for their school’s tennis competition. This booklet is designed to help students distinguish fact and opinion and offer both positive and negative arguments to real and artificial Christmas trees. They discover the history behind the origins of the Christmas tree and discuss why they think it’s so popular. The social, economic, and environmental implications of each type of tree are discussed and analysed to aid the students in deciding which they think is more appropriate. Their task is to use what they have learnt to design a leaflet highlighting their opinion to help the public decide; this is then peer assessed. The lesson concludes with the students designing their own alternative Christmas tree using their hobbies as inspiration. This project-based unit can be used as an individual or group activity, or assessment. The students are tasked to create a leaflet for the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust to help promote fund-raising and raise awareness to preserve the Antarctic huts used by explorers of the past. A breakdown of the leaflet is given which includes the format to be used, including the colour scheme of the Antarctic tartan. Each page is assigned a topic including the front cover, who the AHT are, information about Antarctica and a set of rules to be followed by visitors and tourists. Several websites are given to help with research, although independent research is encouraged, and a 3 minute film looking at why people wish to visit Antarctica, and the impacts they can have, has been included. In addition, a 22-page booklet produced by the Britain’s Antarctic Heritage gives an insight to their aims, the history of the area and what they wish to accomplish in the future. The Sherpa people live in the most mountainous region of Nepal; they have become heavily influenced by Westerners who employ them while trying to conquer Mount Everest. This worksheet helps students discover the history and life of the Sherpa people. It concludes with students developing their own views on whether these influences are positive or negative. The impacts on the mountain are discussed with the support of a newspaper article. It explores how in the past the Sherpa people have cleared some 6500 pounds of debris left behind by explorers. The final task is to combine the information gathered and design a suitable permanent settlement at Everest Base Camp taking into consideration the views of conflicting groups and the needs of the Sherpas and visitors. This booklet introduces and teaches the students how to read longitude and latitude, as well as help students develop their descriptive, sensory and research skills. The students investigate the two teams who raced to the poles in in 1911 and study the problems caused by the increasing number of tourists visiting Antarctica. Ways to reduce these impacts are discussed in addition to whether the students think Antarctica should be protected or not. The booklet is concluded with the students designing a leaflet to help promote funding to preserve the huts used by Robert Scott’s Antarctic Exhibition team. This 30-minute lesson investigates how thunderstorms are created, the four main characteristics of a thunderstorm – thunder and lightning, hail, wind, and rain – and their positive and negative effects. This unit helps students to explore what they and others believe and why. The difference between urban myths and conspiracy theories is discussed in conjunction with primary and secondary sources and their dependability. The students investigate a myth or theory of their own choosing, citing evidence for and against and considering the reliability of the evidence which helps to develop their debating skills. How we decide what we do and don’t believe is examined with the repercussions this can have in our everyday lives. The unit closes with the students inventing their own myth, theory or legend and creating a booklet advertising this to visitors to your town. This is one of my favourite units with my students as it is predominantly student led which helps build confidence, trust, and responsibility as they work in groups outside of the classroom, independently from the teacher. The unit walks the students through carrying out an investigation around their school breaking down the different components (Introduction, Aim, Hypothesis, Method, Presenting Data, Discussion, Conclusion and Evaluation), explaining the purpose of each, the expected length and giving some sentence starter suggestions. The unit concludes with the student’s peer assessing each other’s group presentations of their investigations. This resource includes the student workbooks, a class PowerPoint presentation and a booklet describing different graphs and their uses which can aid the students in their data presentation. This unit of work begins by asking students to define religion and why they think people choose to follow them. The students complete a graph showing the percentages o religions in India and demonstrate what they believe they already know or understand of Hinduism. The story of ‘A Mysterious Beast’ helps to illustrate the diversity of Hinduism through a jigsaw-tyle game and the structure of the Hindu gods is explained. Reincarnation, karma, medication and yoga are discussed in regard to how Hindus live their lives and how they believe it can affect life after death. Hindus believe in ‘ashramas’ – the four stages of life every Hindu should go through. The students discuss when they think we enter each stage and what our responsibilities are at each stage, concluding with what they believe are the four important stages of their lives and a description of these. The background and traditions of Diwali are introduced through the story of Rama and Sita which explains why the ‘Festival Of Lights’ is celebrated and why Divas - small clay lamps – are an important part of the celebration. The students discover cultural and religious festivals where light plays an important role and discuss why these similarities have arisen. The students are then given the opportunity to produce a collage or design a card depicting the beauty and wonderful colours of Diwali. Pilgrimages are important across many cultures and religions, and many Hindus will travel to the River Ganges as part of theirs. The legend surrounding the goddess Ganga is told and the effects on the river from the many visitors and industrialisation of India is debated.
