This is from a Guided Reading Activity from a set of 24 that makes up 4 separate guided reading challenges designed for 4 year groups in KS3 and 4. Each extract is from one of the SPEARS topics (Social, Political, Economic, Armed Conflict, Religious and Science).

Guided Reading is an activity in which students are given an extract (2-4 pages-ish) from a real history book. They have to read through it and annotate it, with a ‘subtitle’ and 1-2 bullet points of key details of each paragraph. At the end there is space for students to write a summary of their learning from the extract.

US Civil War Project Make a lesson: Teach a lesson
A quick project lesson on the American Civil War, ideal for cover lessons or when you’ve got a lot of marking to do!

10 Revision flash cards and access to an online quiz activity (self marking). This is to be used in conjunction with the incredible Medieval Life Role Playing Game at Wolsey Academy (Google us)
If you have not tried them yet - do so now. Students play a medieval character and roam around a Medieval village talking to the characters and learning about how they learned their lives, completing activities as they do. A really engaging way to get students involved and it makes an excellent homework task.

I started teaching 12 years ago and in my PGCE year I made a ppt file (modestly) called ‘Master Plan’. In there I collected every lesson activity that I could so I could save time by recycling slide templates but also it proved to be a great reservoir of ideas if I was ever stuck for a lesson. And so here it is, hopefully others can benefit too.
They’re divided up into Starters, Development, Plenary and Resources – but they can all be mixed, matched and edited to your needs!
I’ve taught History, Geography, Computer Science, Business Studies and English during the last 12 years (Jack of all trades, master of none…) so the templates come filled in with a wide range of existing information/activities but the idea is not to use these slides in your lessons directly – but just like I’ve done, use them for inspiration and quick editing.

This is part of a series of 7 lessons (and 3 Guided Reading Activities) about the New Deal. It is aimed at A Level/IB students and focusses on the New Deal’s policies, their impact, the opposition to them and the historiography of them since. All the lessons contain all the resources within them required for the students to successfully research and answer the questions.
