How Fast Can You Run? Math Investigation - Measurement, Averages & Division

(0)
This is a great physical outdoor math investigation that looks at measuring, averages, and division. For this activity students will measure out a running course (20 meters works well) and see how fast they can run the length of it. They can have three or four attempts before working out the average of their times. Once they’ve figured out their average they can then use the formulas to work out how was they were running in meters per second and kilometers per second. This pack contains two levels of differentiation as well as a challenge question extension sheet for those early finishers. Equipment needed: Meter stick / measuring wheel Stop watch - Calculator (depending on the level of challenge you want to provide) Resource sheets Please don’t forget to rate this resource to let us know what you think. Leaf Percentages - Outdoor Math Activity Freebie

(0)
This activity will get students sorting leaves and looking at different percentages as well as getting them to convert between percentages, decimals, and fractions. **Teaching Structure: ** Before this activity students need to have an input on working out fractions and converting them to percentages and decimals. Take students outside and ask them to collect the specified number of leaves (ability dependent). Get them to complete the table by sorting out the leaves into certain groups before working out the fraction, percent, and decimal. This pack contains 4 levels of differentiation. Diff.1: Students will work out the percentage after collecting 10 leaves and sorting them into groups. Diff. 2: Students will work out the fraction, percent, and decimal after collecting 10 leaves and sorting them into groups. Diff. 3: Students will work out the fraction, percent, and decimal after collecting 20 leaves and sorting them into groups. Diff. 4: Students will work out the fraction, percent, and decimal after collecting 15 leaves and sorting them into groups. Please don’t forget to rate this resource to let us know what you think. Outdoor Multiplication and Addition Activity: Years 1 - 2

(0)
This activity is a great lesson to do before our ‘simple addition’ task cards as it’s slightly more adult led. Students will look at dividing a group of sticks into equal groups and seeing if there are any left over. It’s a great way to introduce multiplication and division to your students in a very visual and practical way. Teaching directions: Give your students an amount of time (1-2 minutes works well) to collect as many sticks as they can. Come back together with their sticks and get them to work through the differentiated worksheets. You can either let students complete the worksheet individually / in small groups or go through the worksheet as a group or class together. As you go through the sheet, try to introduce them to vocabulary such as ‘divide, division, share, remainder, etc. Please don’t forget to rate this resource to let us know what you think. Tree Age Investigation - Measuring - Outdoor Math Activity

(0)
The tree age investigation is a great activity if you’re focusing on perimeter, measuring, or data handling. Your class will use a simple formula to figure out the rough age of the trees around your outdoor space, completing some fun challenges, or collecting data to input into graphs. This resource pack contains two different activities you could do when looking at the ages of trees. Challenge questions – For this activity your class will figure out the age of trees while completing the different challenges on the sheet. Data handling – Students will collect data by identifying trees and calculating their age. They will then use this data to complete bar graphs and answer some questions about their findings. Both of these activities work best in pairs as it makes it easier to measure the diameter of trees. The Growing Race Math / Science Outdoor Investigation: Grades 4 - 5

Growing plants is great fun and can lead to loads of teaching opportunities. For this activity students will plant a variety of species and measure their growth rate over time. The students first look at how they can carry out this investigation, completing an investigation plan. After the seeds are planted they’ll measure the height of each plant every week and record their findings on the table. As part of the sheet they’ll need to work out differences in heights. We suggest using 4 - 5 different types of plants, ideally ones with a clear difference in growth rate. How you carry this investigation out depends greatly on the space you have available. You may choose to use separate plant pots or maybe you have a veg patch available. It’s good to discuss the importance of the plants being in the same locations. Why is the sun important for plants? Why is water important? You can go into as much or little detail as needed in these discussions. It can be useful to set up a timetable of who is going to care for the plants each day. If you choose to use fruits or vegetables (highly recommended!) you can then go onto use these as another stimulus for activities. Suggested Plants: Tomato Spinach Baby Carrots Bush Beans Green Onions Summer Squash Beets Please don’t forget to rate this resource to let us know what you think.
