Big believer in the power of beautiful lesson plans to make learning easier. My resources cover the sciences and geography. My biochemistry degree and tuition work I do mean I create resources for a lot of courses as and when I need a resource-always feel free to comment and request something if you want something else or an adaptation. OCR diseases in humans notes and worksheet, A-level and AS-level biology A

(0)
This two-page resource lists pathogens, transmission routes, disease effects, treatment methods and other facts for human diseases on the OCR A-level biology A course. The large number of disease case studies on the course is something students need a lot of help with. A blank worksheet version is also included for students to fill in themselves. To help students build up a common sense knowledge of the kind of issues surrounding these diseases that could be important in future and likely topics of exam questions, there’s a section on “other things to know” explaining issues like malaria potentially being spread by global warming, and multi-drug resistant TB. That should make this set of notes particularly useful for students aiming high and looking to study medicine, nursing and biosciences degrees in future or getting ready for interviews. I’ve mentioned recent developments since the specification was published that would be worth knowing for interviews. I’ve had positive feedback from students who found it interesting and felt that it gave them a sense of issues in modern medicine-one student studying history A-level said it helped put studying AIDS in history in context.

Making copper sulfate insoluble base worksheet, Edexcel GCSE 9-1 chemistry

(0)
Worksheet on making copper sulfate crystals from copper oxide (the insoluble base method) covering two pages for Edexcel 9-1 GCSE chemistry, versions in colour and in black and white for printing with a mark scheme. Covers removing the excess copper oxide and letting crystals form. There’s a link to a recommended video from Pearson. The content is divided over the two pages: the first page is more “directly on the topic” questions and could be used on its own for students at the time they cover copper sulphate or do the practical, the second page is more extension and for “final exam revision”: based on student questions and points that came up from discussing the video, I made the second page cover more synoptic questions making connections with other topics, like temperature and rate of reaction. The worksheet is targeted towards building exam technique and written question skills, so doesn’t include a full practical method. Specification reference: SC8c core practical, preparing copper sulfate, C3.17

GCSE chemistry and biology written question revision notes

5 Resources
One-page sets of notes on some of the most important written questions in GCSE chemistry and biology. In chemistry, covers rate of reaction, temperature, equilibrium, types of bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic) and conducting electricity. There’s also my one-page introduction to chemistry that tries to put on one page as many definitions as possible so students can use it to decode the course’s content if they’re having problems holding everything in their head. The GCSE biology notes cover respiration, with aerobic, anaerobic and what happens when you exercise. There’s versions of the biology and chemistry notes for general use, and specific versions of the chemistry notes for AQA and Edexcel iGCSE.

How to predict the second and third ionisation energies, A-level chemistry

(0)
One of the hardest questions the examiners can ask at A-level is how to predict the second and third ionisation energy. It’s not clearly labelled in the textbooks how to do this. So here’s a three-page set of notes on how to do this, working through some exam-style questions. Specification references include: OCR A 3.1.1, AQA 3.1.1.3
Halogen appearance notes A-level

Halogen appearance notes A-level

(0)
Ready reference notes on the group 7 elements, covering their colour and state as elements, their colours dissolved in water and organic solvents, the precipitation reactions with silver nitrate, and their redox reactions with concentrated sulphuric acid. Both an attractive, colourful version showing all the colours and a version in black and white for photocopying. Suitable especially for the AQA exam board. I’ve also added a version squeezing everything onto a single page. It looks very compact but won’t photocopy well as well as the text gets quite small.

The formulas of the negative ions are given for nitrate, chloride and sulfate ions. Suitable for all major GCSE exam boards (e.g. Edexcel, AQA, Cambridge), and I find it really helpful to help A-level students recap what they learned at GCSE and forgot over the summer!
