This lesson also covers material needed for learning about networks and cyber security, but also fits nicely in a unit of work about data representation. In this lesson, students are given the opportunity to reflect on what encryption is and why it is needed as well as practice skills with a Caesar Cipher. There are a range of activities that allow students to read out loud, discuss with other pupils and communicate learning in written activities. There are practical puzzles to investigate encryption algorithms, and a careers guidance discussion about being an ethical hacker. Learning Mat (LM) Worksheet is supplied as PPT, PPTX and PDF formats. Lesson Plan (LP) is supplied as PPT, PPTX and PPT Slideshow. Note that PPT files may lose some functionality.

This lesson draws the whole unit of work on Data Representation to a close. Start with providing students the opportunity to complete the assessment task under test conditions then when work is marked, use the lesson plan (LP) is an opportunity for Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT). Students will understand the correct answers to the questions on the assessment, and then complete 3 targets set by the teacher in their feedback. There is a marksheet (XLSX) to record student scores and to analyse class performance. Learning Mat (LM) Worksheet is supplied as PPT, PPTX and PDF formats. Lesson Plan (LP) is supplied as PPT, PPTX and PPT Slideshow. Note that PPT files may lose some functionality.

Data Representation

17 Resources
A collection of lesson plans that cover the GCSE Specification for Pearson Edexcel Computer Science but that have been differentiated for key stage 3 introduction to data representation. All are complete lessons with learning mats (LM) worksheets, and lesson plans (LP). LM are provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF format. LP are provided in PPTX, PPT and PPS format. Note that PPT files may lose some functionality. The lessons take the students on a journey with plenty of recap opportunities to consolidate learning, and a range of learning and teaching activities. Lessons generally do not need computer access, so this unit of work is suitable for cover lessons. There are teacher’s notes which also help to make the lesson appropriate for non-specialist or second subject teachers.

This lesson is the 4th in a series of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding of how networks are organised. In this lesson students develop their understanding of key vocabulary such as IP addresses and the role of the router in transferring data between computers. It involves recall of key information from lesson 2 in the unit. Students are asked to describe the handshake process, discuss the format of data packets, and consider possible errors in transmission of data. This lesson is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats. The learning mat is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. Some animation and image features may be lost in PPT formats. A homework task is also included in this lesson.

This lesson is the 5th in a series of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding of how networks are organised. In this lesson students consider a range of different features of wired and wireless networks and how they impact on the performance of the network. Students should be taught to be critical about real life situations and apply their learning in this lesson to explain which type of network is best for which type of situation. This lesson is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats. The learning mat is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. Some animation and image features may be lost in PPT formats.

A complete lesson and the first lesson of a unit designed to encourage students to understand how and why networks are used. This lesson is focused on the benefits and drawbacks of using a network but also covers the differences between client-server and peer-to-peer networks. The resources include a 'takeaway menu ’ of homework tasks, a selection of possible bell work activities as well as a fully detailed lesson plan and learning mat for students to demonstrate their understanding of the topic. LP in pptx, ppt and pps formats (though some image and animation functionality is lost in earlier versions of PowerPoint. LM, bell work and homework s PPTX, PPT and PDF formats

This is the second in a sequence of lessons that introduce students to the principles of network organisation and the reasons why networks are used. This lesson looks at the differences between LAN and WAN, introduces the idea of a PAN, and also considers the role of the router in creating a LAN. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format, although some image and animation settings lose functionality in the older version of PowerPoint. The learning mat (worksheet) is also available as a PDF version. This will print on A3 paper.

LO: To construct expressions involving file size, transmission rate and time for calculating network speeds. This lesson is the 6th in a series of lessons designed to improve students’ understanding of how networks are organised. In this lesson students focus on the mathematics involved in calculating network speeds, file sizes and time taken to transmit data. Students are asked to recall learning about units used for measuring file sizes. This lesson reflects on the need for accuracy and questions involve units such as MiB, GiB and TiB. This lesson is provided in PPTX, PPTS, PPT formats. The learning mat and homework sheet is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats. Some animation and image features may be lost in PPT formats.

This is the sixth lesson in a sequence of lessons that cover Topic 3: Computers on the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Computer Science course. In this lesson students are reminded about the core model for a computer system, and discuss the need for secondary storage. They are introduced to the history of the development of secondary storage and are asked to compare the functionality, use and benefits and drawbacks of optical, magnetic and solid state storage. Lesson plans are saved in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format. The learning mat (worksheet) and starter activity are saved in PPTX, PPTS and PDF format. Note that PPT files have lost some of the functionality of the animation settings and images.

This is a busy lesson and is fourth in a sequence of lessons that consider how computer systems integrate hardware and software. In this lesson, students consider what happens in the CPU during the fetch-decode-execute process. This lesson may need to be differentiated for some classes. There is an opportunity to consider how the registers work using the little man computer model using an online model. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format although some functionality (such as the video screen grab) is lost in PPT format so the screen grab is also provided separately. The worksheet (learning mat) is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF formats.

This lesson is the third in a sequence of lessons that exposes students to activities that will help them understand how the different components in a computer system interact and communicate with each other. This lesson focuses on the different types of internal main memory in a computer, that are used to start up and keep the computer running. Students learn about the differences in functionality and purpose of ROM, RAM and cache memory. The lesson plan is provided in PPTX, PPTS and PPT format, though some functionality in the PPT file may be lost. The worksheet (learning mat) is provided in PPTX, PPT and PDF format.
