Adjectives for describing characters PPT
A PPT which gives students 30 adjectives for describing personality, and 27 adjectives for describing appearance. Working in groups students need to identify the meaning of the adjective and add it to their table, working out if it is appearance/character and positive/negative/other. Students are then encouraged to add their own words, and then using this word bank they can choose words to describe photographs of characters.
Designed for a class to help build creative writing skills, as well as making inferences about characters. Suitable for EAL, or literacy/English.
Powerful Adjectives WOW Words Word Bank Builder
A PPT which guides students to think about synonyms and building and developing their WOW word bank. Designed for EAL students, but would also suit a low attainment or low age literacy/English class.
Cause and Effect in History Subject Support
Designed for international students to be able to discuss cause and effect in History. Ideal for Subject Support of CLIL classes, language level roughly B1-B2, although could be stretched or supported either side. Focuses on identfiying causes and effects and using linkers for cause and effect. Guides students to research and create their own paragraph describing causes and effects with some peer review guidance and an end debate task. This should be around 6 x 1 hour lessons, but could be made longer or shorter to suit.
Remember to check the notes for useful links and information.
Beat the Egg Heads Teacher Student Gameshow
Great end of term game for Teacher vs Students. Six categories with five questions in each. Both T and S give their answers and then answer is revealed on screen. Great fun.
The Apprentice Project Business English
This class was made for international students studying Business English for the first time at roughly Cambridge BEC Preliminary level. It could also be a fun project for Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4 students who are new to studying business. It was over 10 hours of classes for my students, and about 15 hours including homework tasks.
The PPT guides students through understanding important vocabulary for branding, analysing effective logos, conducting market research, understanding graphs, advertising techniques, creating and giving a pitch. It is designed as a group project in the style of the Apprentice and follows an Apprentice episode based on designing baby food. The students will be designing a new fast food restaurant.
CAE Speaking Explained
A PPT which walks students through the different parts of the CAE speaking test and what is required of them, including example questions for each part. This was a whole lesson for my class when I gave them time to practice and feedback on each part too.
Figurative Language Review with Song Quiz
A PPT designed to help students review 7 main types of figurative language:
Similes, Metaphors, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, Hyperbole, Idioms and Personification. Students fill in the vowels to remember and spell them correctly, then write a short definition of each one with an example sentence, then there are 10 short extracts from pop song lyrics where students need to correctly identify the types of figurative language used in each one. I also found the exact parts of the song for the students to listen to as they were thinking and this went down really well. Great for an end of term review after introducing figurative language. From my experience - students found this really engaging.
Adding Linking Words - Making Inferences
A short simple cloze activity of adding 6 linking words: because, as, so, therefore, as a result, when to basic PEE paragraphs. Ideal for students just learning to make inferences this way and practicing linking their sentences together to be more cohesive.
Making Inferences with Taylor Swift
A PPT I made to introduce my students to what inferences are. There are tasks to make inferences based on a photograph, and then from song lyrics - one for each era. Debut and Fearless I have designed with question prompts for whole class examples, and then each other era to be printed individually for small group work. The final task is a writing task based on a photograph encouraging students to show not tell. Could also be the basis for a nice annotated class display.
Taylor Swift Classroom Rules
A PPT for an introduction or reminder of classroom rules. Could also be printed as one page slides for a classroom display. Each slide features a relevant picture of Taylor, a classroom rule, and a relevant lyric. 13 classroom rules total.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving in Business
An engaging PPT designed to cover 6 x 1 hour lessons with a group of international students being taught subject support to assist them with their Business skills. Notes and answers have been added to the slides to help T where necessary.
The lessons include a variety of speaking, writing, and grammar tasks using a variety of independent, pair and group work.
The lessons are designed to get students understanding critical thining and how to think critically about different things and develop their problem solving skills teaching them to think ‘outside the box’.
The grammar focus for these lessons is on the first conditional. There is a final project for the students to apply their learning.
