Digging Deeper in Novel Studies with Social Media
Give children an opportunity to use critical thinking and dig deeper into their understanding of events in stories as well as the characters by using social media.
The pack provides scaffolded templates of Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook with suggestions related to the reading and writing standards for the 2014 National Curriculum of England in Key Stage 2.
A link is also provided to a digital copy of the file for editing and sharing on Google Classroom and Seesaw.
Turtles All The Way Down Novel Study
This resource is designed to be used during Reading Workshop and is to be used with Turtles All the Way Down by John Green.
ABOUT THE NOVEL: It’s quite rare to find someone who sees the same world you see.

The Lie Tree Novel Study
This resource is designed to be used during Reading Workshop and is to be used with The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge.
ABOUT THE NOVEL: Faith Sunderly leads a double life. To most people, she is reliable, dull, trustworthy—a proper young lady who knows her place as inferior to men—but inside, Faith is full of questions and curiosity, and she cannot resist a mystery: an unattended envelope, an unlocked door. She also knows secrets no one suspects her of knowing. For one, she knows that her family moved to the close-knit island of Vane because her famous scientist father was fleeing a reputation-destroying scandal. And when her father is discovered dead shortly thereafter, she knows that he was murdered.
In pursuit of justice and revenge, Faith hunts through her father’s possessions and discovers a strange tree. The tree bears fruit only when she whispers a lie to it, and when that fruit is eaten, it delivers a hidden truth. But while the tree might hold the key to her father’s murder, it could also lure his murderer directly to Faith.

Self & Peer Editing Checklists (Narrative, Persuasive, Explanation, Information Writing)
This resource can be used for self or peer editing in a Key Stage 2 classroom. The guidelines used for mechanics, structure, grammar, and style have been taken from the Interim Guidelines for End of Key Stage 2 Expectations in England.
When I have used these in the classroom, I will place coloured pencils in yellow, green, pink, and blue on tables and have the children mark where specific requirements are missing or needing change on the papers of their peers.
I have included additional pages where the requirements are blank so that you can design them as a class or with focus groups. I have also included the digital copy for editing or sharing on Google Classroom or Seesaw (ideal for paperless classrooms), with a link provided with download.
Teams & Athletes: Design a Team Jersey (with Explanation Text)
Children will look at how sports team logos have changed over time before designing a team logo of their own. Children then repeat the same structure, this time looking at team jerseys. Last, they will write an explanation text of how logos or jerseys have changed over time.

Teams & Athletes: Sports Equipment Design (Explanation Text and Persuasive Text BUNDLE)
Great to tie in with the 2018 Olympic Games!
Children will look at how sports equipment has changed over time before making a modification of their own.
Children will follow the DT process outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum of England, designing their own prototype, making their prototype, and then participating in peer- and self- evaluation of their prototype.
When finished the design process, there are also resources included for writing an explanation text (of how their sports equipment has changed over time or how their new sports equipment modifications will work); and writing a persuasive text including an advert about their product.

Fortune Hunters: Geography of Gems (Persuasive Writing about Mining)
Children will investigate different gemstones and where they are found around the world. They will also do a study of how the gemstones are extracted from the earth and will write a persuasive text about whether mining should continue or stop.

Vikings: Design a T-Shirt & Explanation Text
Children will look at different symbols significant to the Vikings and will design a tshirt including the symbols. They will then write an explanation text that describes the different symbols included, as well as the reasons for the design choices.
In the past, this unit has worked really well at the end of a Viking study, where the children can show off what they’ve learned.

Vikings: Monastery Invasion BUNDLE
This BUNDLE allows children to learn about Viking raids on monasteries in Northern England - and the 793 CE attack on Lindisfarne in particular.
The persuasive text can be written from the perspective of a Monk or a Viking, and is meant to persuade (or dissuade) their audience - either Monks or Vikings - from trading with or plundering a Monastery.
The narrative text can be written from the perspective of a Monk or a Viking during the raid of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in North East England in 793 CE.
In the past, I have introduced this lesson dressed as a Monk in a Monastery with the lights off and candles lit. I play audio in the background of Monks singing (link provided) before acting frightened at the arrival of Vikings coming ashore (link provided).
