GCSE FRENCH: French Verbs Lesson: DEVOIR, POUVOIR, VOULOIR

I love the verbs devoir, vouloir, and pouvoir. Once your students know these, they'll be speaking in full sentences in no time, and that's very motivating. It's always a good idea to have lots of exercises on hand for practice, and for exposure to new vocabulary. This product includes a link to my YouTube video lessons about power verbs (present, passé composé, imparfait) and to the Quizlet study sets I've created to accompany those videos.

GCSE FRENCH: French Speaking Activity: Faire de la Conversation

Your students are going to learn a lot with this lesson, and it will have them speaking to each other in no time. This lesson can easily be used with beginners, intermediate, or advanced learners. You can adapt it to every level. Beginners should at least know the verbs être and avoir and some very basic vocabulary. More advanced students can go far, as there are many possibilities. Activity 1 Practice making conversation during a phone call from your friend, Luc. He will ask you to come to his party. Your lines are fairly open-ended, but they must correspond to what he says next, so watch out! Activity 2 Before moving on to the second part of this speaking activity, let’s review some of the most common professions. You can practice this new vocabulary by clicking on the link above which will bring you to a set of review exercises on Quizlet. This document contains a list of professions in English and French, then there's another part with only the French word and an image. All of the images correspond to the images found within the Quizlet study set. After reviewing the professions vocabulary, proceed to the next page where you will see a picture of 11 different people, all with different professions. Activity 3 Tout d’abord, comment s’appellent ces gens, quel âge ont-ils, et quelles sont leurs professions? Have a look at the people in this picture. Use your imagination to determine what their professions are (you may not have the same ideas as others, and that’s ok). Once you’ve determined their professions, tell us what their names are, and how old they are. Again, use your imagination, and try to come up with some French names! Look just below the picture to see an example, then complete the exercise by providing the same information for the other 10 people in the picture (left to right). Activity 4 Now let’s imagine we’re at a party (une soirée). It’s time to make polite conversation (ce qui peut être difficile, mais nous sommes très polis, et intéressants!) Let’s imagine that all of the people in the picture above are at the party, but they don’t know each other. It’s time to make small talk (faire des rencontres et des échanges), en français! Activity 5 Randomly choose two people from the picture above. You’ve already established their names, ages, and professions. The objective here is to have two people who don’t know each other make small talk. You will be practicing your conversation skills, which are: starting a conversation, continuing a conversation, and ending a conversation.

When you are teaching or reviewing the verb AVOIR and AVOIR EXPRESSIONS your students will have a great time practicing with this hands on game: QUEL DOMMAGE!! This is a review game in which students play by filling in the blanks with the verb avoir. You can use any tense with this game and review avoir expressions at the same time. There is an answer key in the present tense that students can use to check their work. Some sentences use simple negation. Perfect supplement for core French, French immersion and homeschool curriculums. Using avoir expressions is essential to forming a strong base knowledge of French, yet they can be difficult to master without lots and lots of practice and review. You can pull this game out time and time again over the course of the years (use it when reviewing the verb avoir in any tense) as a no-prep activity. Detailed instructions on how to play are included so that even subs can have your students play this fun game when you need to be away. How to play QUEL DOMMAGE: All you have to do is print the game cards on heavy paper or card stock and cut them out. If you laminate them you'll have a no prep activity ready to go for years to come! Put all of the game pieces in a box and divide your students into small teams. Give each team gets a box of questions and a copy of the answer key. Students fill in the blanks with the correct conjugation of the verb AVOIR and say the sentence correctly. When they are correct (their opponents or team members can verify responses on the provided answer key), they get to keep their game card. However, when they draw a QUEL DOMMAGE card they have to put all of their game cards back in the box. The student with the most game cards at the end is the winner. Included: 5 QUEL DOMMAGE cards - You don’t have to include them all in the game if you feel there are too many. 30 numbered game cards - Black and white and color versions provided. 20 questions games - Small group or whole class no prep activities 5 versions of the game are included for a total of 260 vocabulary words. Many of the words will likely be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words. One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word. Are you……. … a person? … an animal? … a mineral? … a place? … food? … a plant? … an object? The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: YES - NO - SOMETIMES - RARELY - GENERALLY - MAYBE - IT DEPENDS - PROBABLY Alternative game play: To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.
